A Night Out - 1915 Black & White. Chaplin and his side-kick in this film, Ben Turpin, have embarked on a night out of trying to drink the town dry. The resulting drunkenness ensures that a small dog, a beautiful woman, a slipper, an embittered husband and a soda syphon are all included in the chaos. Also notable, this film launched the career of the beautiful woman, Edna Purviance, who was to appear in all but two of Chaplins films over the next eight years. Kid Auto at the Races - 1914 Black & White. Made by the Keystone Studio, this film was only Chaplins second and features our hero just getting in the way! A real life childrens auto race is being filmed at Venice Beach, California and this back drop is just an opportunity for Chaplin to create impromptu fun from what he finds around him. This film helped cement Chaplins relationship with the Keystone Studio, from which they both benefited greatly. Cruel, Cruel Love - 1914 Black & White. The well-to-do Lord Helpus, Chaplin, has been caught (surprise surprise!) canoodling with the maid. Understandably, his real sweetheart dumps him and a remorseful Lord Helpus decides to end it all with a cup of poison. The doctors are called, the sweetheart forgives him and the poison turns out to have been a glass of harmless water! A Film Johnny - 1914 Black & White. After seeing a beautiful girl on the screen at a cinema, our hero decides to track her down and his campaign takes him to the studio where the film in which she featured was made. Once again, the humour is primarily made from Chaplin just getting in the way! Look out for the appearance of Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle. Behind the Screen - 1916 Black & White. A difficult film to describe in any way other than just chaotic. Chaplin, helping a good looking girl get into the movies finds himself the target of many custard pie throwers. Despite the quantity of pie thrown, Chaplin never gets hit, luck which was to stay with him throughout his movie career.
