Actor Don Cheadle was invited to Uganda to attend a charity screening of his film Hotel Rwanda for the children -- the victims -- of yet another African emergency. In northern Uganda, more than 30,000 children have been kidnapped over the last two decades in an ugly civil war between the Ugandan government and a group called the Lord's Resistance Army. The children, between the ages of 8 and 14, are stolen and forced to join the LRA. Those who refuse are killed. The boys are made into brutal and murderous child-soldiers. The girls are given to rebel commanders as wives. There have been negotiations in fits and starts over the last 20 years, even a few attempts at cease-fires and amnesty. But so far nothing has stuck. Cheadle, his wife and two preteen daughters visited a rehabilitation camp for young soldiers trying to find their way back into society. It is a long haul for kids who have committed multiple killings before they are even 11 years old. Cheadle and his family went to a camp for night commuters, children who are so afraid of being taken by the LRA that they flee their homes and flood into the northern town of Gulu by the thousands, seeking a safe night's sleep. And from there to an internally displaced persons camp filled with Ugandans who can't go home because it's just too dangerous.
