Young Robin watches his home village of Loxley being burned to the ground by Norman soldiers and his father Ailric, who openly has rebelled against the Norman rule in England, is soon after brutally murdered by the Sheriff of Nottingham. 15 years later, the adult Robin, after his father's death fostered by the local miller, is caught poaching in Sherwood Forest together with his young foster brother Much and brought to the dungeons of Nottingham Castle. After having miraculously escaped imprisonment together with his foster brother and three fellow prisoners, Robin is chosen by the forest god Herne the Hunter to help protect the weak and helpless against the Norman tyrants who have taken over rule in England.

The Witch of Elsdon:
The beautiful Jennet of Elsdon rejects the amorous advances of the Sheriff's steward, Sir Guy of Gisburne, and is as a consequence accused of witchcraft by Sir Guy and imprisoned in the Nottingham Castle dungeons together with her husband. The Sheriff, however, realises that Jennet has been set up by his very 'susceptible' steward and thus gives Jennet the opportunity to save her and her husband's lives in return for a 'small favour'. This is an offer that Jennet just cannot refuse...

Die englische Fernsehserie Robin Of Sherwood entstand in den Jahren 1983 bis 1985. Die komplette erste Staffel liegt nun im Sammelschuber vor. Richard Carpenter schuf die Serie, die den Legenden um den edlen Banditen aus den Wäldern von Sherwood erstmals einen Fantasy-Anstrich gab und zudem Wert darauf legte, das England der Kreuzzüge nicht als schöne Idylle darzustellen, sondern als von Armut und tyrannischen Herren geknechtetes Land. In den ersten beiden Staffel spielte Michael Praed die Titelrolle des Robin Hood, in der dritten Staffel übernahm Seans Sohn Jason Connery die Rolle des "Hooded Man".

Der junge Robin of Loxley wächst als Stiefsohn des Müllers von Nottingham auf, nachdem sein Vater von den Normannen ermordet worden ist. Doch sein Schicksal ist ihm vorhergesagt: Er ist der "Hooded Man", auserwählt von Herne, dem mystischen Jäger, der in den Wäldern von Sherwood über die Mächte des Guten wacht. So wird Robin mit seinen Gefährten, Much, dem Müllerssohn, Will Scarlet (Ray Winstone), Little John (Clive Mantle) und Bruder Tuck zum Beschützer der Armen und Entrechteten. Lady Marion (Judi Trott) ist durchaus nicht nur "Damsel in Distress", sondern steht Robin und seinen "Merry Men" tatkräftig zur Seite. Die Figur des Sarazenen Nasir (Mark Ryan) wurde derart populär, dass sie in Gestalt von Morgan Freeman in Robin Hood: König der Diebe sogar Einzug ins Hollywood-Kino hielt. Die Serie lebt auch von dem herrlich bösen Sheriff von Nottingham, der Alan Rickman in nichts nachsteht, dem fanatischen Sir Guy of Gisburne, dem gerissenen Abt Hugo und dem teuflischen Baron de Belleme. Die einzelnen Episoden erzählen meist in sich geschlossene Geschichten -- vom hoffnungslos romantischen Minnesänger Alan a Dale, skrupellosen Rittern des Templerordens oder Richard Löwenherz (John Rhys Davies) -- doch ist das verbindende Element immer die Legende um den "Hooded Man", der dem Volk Gerechtigkeit bringen wird. Der wundervolle Soundtrack der Serie, der den Einfluss der keltischen Mythen unterstreicht, stammt von der irischen Gruppe Clannad und trägt bezeichnenderweise den Titel Legend. --Birgit Schwenger

In 'Robin Hood and the Sorcerer (Parts 1 and 2)', Robin (Michael Praed) meets the men who will form his rebel band after being unjustly imprisoned by Guy of Gisburne. After making his escape, he rescues Lady Marion from sorcerer the Baron De Belleme. 'The Witch of Elsdon' sees the Sheriff of Nottingham (Nickolas Grace) attempting to use alleged witch Jennet of Elsdon to render Robin and his men powerless. In 'Seven Poor Knights from Acre', Robin has to take on the Knights Templar when their leader accuses him of stealing a sacred emblem. 'Alan A Dale' sees Robin and his men helping out a newly arrived minstrel with a broken heart, and finally in 'The King's Fool' Robin is invited to fight at the side of King Richard.
