This film does not flinch from showing every conceivable horror of the French penal system as it follows notorious French felon, Henri Charriere (better know as PAPILLON), through his struggle to escape life of staving off starvation, madness, and disease. Although he does escape from the prison for a while to live among a nomadic indian tribe--eventually they move on and he returns to "civilization" where he is captured and transported to the "escape-proof" Devil's Island off the coast of French Guiana. While life here is much more comfortable than the prison, he still yearns to be free leading the final escape by making a ramshackled raft and leaping off the deadly, sheer cliffs, into the currents, and the waves attacking the rocky shoreline and sailing away. Imprisoned on infamous Devil's Island, Papillon (Steve McQueen) is obsessed with the idea of freedom.
