Max Barber (Robert De Niro) ist als Filmproduzent nicht sonderlich erfolgreich: gemeinsam mit seinem Kollegen Walter Creason (Zach Braff) hat er Schulden bei der Mafia zu begleichen. Die beiden planen, dies mit einem Versicherungsbetrug zu bewerkstelligen - ihr Hauptdarsteller Duke Montana (Tommy Lee Jones) soll am Set einen "Unfalltod" sterben. Doch da haben die Betrüger ihre Rechnung ohne den ehemaligen Westernstar gemacht.

The Comeback Trail boasts a host of film legends including Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, and Zach Braff. B-movie producer Max Barber (DeNiro) alongside his nephew and partner Walter (Braff), run into trouble with mob gangster Reggie Fontaine (Freeman). In an attempt to pay off their debts, Barber and Walter set up the drunk and aging cowboy movie star, Duke Montana (Jones) for an insurance scam on the set of their latest film, ‚ÄòThe Oldest Gun In The West‚Äô. Barber‚Äôs and Walter‚Äôs quick money scheme doesn‚Äôt go to plan in the way they imagined, but they wind up getting more than they ever hoped for. George Gallo (Bad Boys, Middle Men) directs The Comeback Trail which he has written alongside Josh Posner (Persephone: Pictures at the End of the World) in association with Storyboard Media, and Cloudburst Entertainment.
