[ORIGINAL CAPTION: ] Coast Guard Barges Hit the French Coast. Coast Guard landing barges hit the French Coast with the first wave of American troops under heavy fire from Nazi beach nests. This photo, taken from a landing barge by a Coast Guard combat photographer, shows the troops waist deep as they wade ashore. These landing barges shuttled back and forth from their assault transports to the beach carrying troops throughout D-Day.

Japanese prisoners of war under guard on Midway, following their rescue from an open lifeboat by USS Ballard (AVD-10) on 19 June 1942. They were survivors of the sunken aircraft carrier Hiryu. After being held for a few days on Midway, they were sent on to Pearl Harbor on 23 June aboard USS Sirius (AK-15), arriving there on 1 July. Note Marine guard in the center background, armed with a M1903 Springfield rifle.
In Dry Dock # 1 at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard, 29 May 1942, receiving urgent repairs for damage received in the Battle of Coral Sea. She left Pearl Harbor the next day to participate in the Battle of Midway. USS West Virginia (BB-48), sunk in the 7 December 1941 Japanese air attack, is being salvaged in the left distance.

A LCVP landing craft from USS Samuel Chase (APA-26) approaches Omaha Beach on D-Day, 6 June 1944. The boat is smoking from a fire that resulted when a German machine gun bullet hit a hand grenade. After discharging his load of troops the boat's coxwain, Coastguardsman Delba L. Nivens of Amarillo, Texas, assisted by his engineman and bowman, put out the fire and returned to their transport.
