Raymond Taylor, then an NYPD detective, collars future crime boss John Gotti in the 1974 slaying of James McBratney of West Brighton. While Gotti descended into ignominy, Mr. Taylor went on to a second career as proprietor of the Claddagh Gift Shop on Forest Avenue and distinction as Staten Island's pre-eminent Irishman. The lifelong Islander, renowned for his philanthropy, died Monday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
