Diesen Wunsch konnte der New Yorker Universitätsprofessor Mike Lawford (Nicolas Cage) seinem Sohn Charlie einfach nicht abschlagen. Mike, seine Frau Kristen und ihr kleiner Junge machen einen Familienausflug und besuchen die Halloweenparade. Der Ausflug ist auch eine Gelegenheit, den Zusammenhalt in Mikes Familie zu kitten. Durch das große Arbeitspensum ist Mike kaum noch präsent, für Kristen und Charlie ist er selten ansprechbar. Während der Parade verschwindet Charlie spurlos. Selbst mit Unterstützung der Polizei und von Privatdetektiven gibt es nach einem Jahr keinen Hinweis auf Charlies Schicksal.

Mike fühlt sich für das Verschwinden seines Sohnes schuldig. In der Nacht wird er von heftigen Albträumen geplagt, und tagsüber hat er Visionen, die stets mit Charlie in Verbindung stehen. Mike ist immer stärker davon überzeugt, dass der Junge mit ihm Kontakt aufnehmen will. Er beschließt mit Kristen und Hannah (Veronica Ferres) den übernatürlichen Geschehnissen auf den Grund zu gehen. Bald stellt sich heraus, dass sie Charlie aus den Fängen eines rachsüchtigen Geistes befreien müssen. Nach seinen großen europäischen Kinoerfolgen "Christiane F." und "Letzte Ausfahrt Brooklyn" bekam Uli Edel immer wieder Angebote aus Hollywood.

Dort hat sich der deutsche Regisseur auf günstig produzierte, aber solide gemachte Mystery-Thriller spezialisiert. "Pay the Ghost" ist einer davon, spannend inszeniert und hervorragend besetzt mit Oscar-Preisträger Nicolas Cage in der Hauptrolle des verzweifelten Literaturprofessors Mike. Veronica Ferres spielt die Gespenster-Expertin Hannah.
