SAN DIEGO, Calif. - When Marine Gunnery Sgt. Chris Willingham first laid eyes on two-year-old Lucca the Military Working Dog (MWD), he knew she was different. Chris and Lucca did back-to-back tours of duty in Iraq, working to locate and disarm IEDs, improvised explosive devices. After two deployments with Lucca, Chris was promoted and his four-legged best friend was handed over to another Sargent. One day on patrol, Lucca detected an explosive and lost one front leg in the explosion. Always knowing he would adopt Lucca one she retired, Chris immediately volunteered to take in the dog. Lucca became a national sensation, becoming a mascot for military working dogs, she?s even referred to as ?hero dog.? For Chris, Lucca is still his best friend and a life long companion.
