Helgoland ist Deutschlands einzige Hochseeinsel und damit etwas ganz Besonderes. Seit Jahrhunderten trotzt der rote Felsen den Elementen und bietet Mensch und Tier einen Zufluchtsort inmitten der rauen Nordsee. Tausende Zugvögel rasten hier auf ihrem kräftezehrenden Flug über die Deutsche Bucht in wärmere Regionen. Seehunde und Kegelrobben bringen an den Stränden ihre Jungen zur Welt. Die kleine Insel von 1,5 Quadratkilometern bietet zu jeder Jahreszeit grandiose Naturschauspiele. Vor der Küste jagen Basstölpel in spektakulären Flugmanövern nach Fisch.

Am winterlichen Strand kämpfen massige Kegelrobbenbullen um die Weibchen. Wenn im Sommer die aufgeregten Rufe Tausender Seevögel die roten Klippen erfüllen, ist es Zeit für den Lummensprung: Hunderte noch flugunfähige Trottellummenküken stürzen sich dann todesmutig aus dem Fels in die Tiefe, gelockt von ihren Eltern. Ein Naturereignis, das sich das Team der Vogelwarte Helgoland nicht entgehen lässt. Alljährlich zählen und beringen die Mitarbeitenden die jungen Lummen und helfen auch mal nach, wenn der Sprung ins Wasser nicht glückt. Das Hauptinteresse der Vogelforschenden aber gilt dem Vogelzug. Seit über 100 Jahren werden die Frühjahrs- und Herbstwanderungen der Zugvögel von den WissenschaftlerInnen des Instituts für Vogelforschung dokumentiert und ausgewertet.

Über einen Zeitraum von zwei Jahren haben Robert Morgenstern und sein Team die Atmosphäre und Geschichten Helgolands eingefangen und zu einem Porträt der Insel und seiner Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner verwoben. Die Urelemente und Stimmungen, wogende Wassermassen, das kräftige Farbenspiel des Abendrots, die Weite des Sternenhimmels über dem blitzenden Leuchtfeuer und das Rauschen der Vogelschwärme in der Nacht verleihen Helgoland einen ganz besonderen Zauber. Durch Zeitlupen- und Zeitrafferaufnahmen wird dieser Rhythmus der Insel in diesem Film lebendig und anschaulich. Die besonderen Perspektiven und Tieraufnahmen zeichnen im Erstlingswerk von Robert Morgenstern die Vielfalt und die Besonderheiten der roten Insel nach und geben darüber hinaus faszinierende Einblicke in die Arbeit der VogelkundlerInnen.
