"Fort Apache - The Bronx" von Daniel Petrie gilt bis heute als einer der besten und eindrucksvollsten Polizeifilme überhaupt - neben Lumets "Prince of the City" (1981), Ciminos "Im Jahr des Drachen" (1984), Friedkins "Leben und Sterben in L. A." (1985) und De Palmas "Die Unbestechlichen" (1986). Damit wurde das Genre des Polizeifilms zur meistdiskutierten und auffälligsten Spielart populärer Kinounterhaltung der 80er Jahre. Allein zwischen 1981 und 1988 wurden in den USA circa 70 Polizeifilme produziert, und "Fort Apache", der erste wirklich interessante Polizeifilm des Jahrzehnts, setzte dabei Maßstäbe. Es war der gelungene Versuch, die Grenzen polizeilicher Ordnungstätigkeit aufzuzeigen und zugleich ihre Verstrickung in die allgemeine soziale Misere. Dass sich in einer zerstörten Gesellschaft mit staatlichen Machtmitteln ein geordnetes Zusammenleben nicht herstellen lässt, ist das bittere, aber ehrliche Fazit des Films, der nach den Erinnerungen der beiden Polizisten Tom Mulhearn und Pete Tessitore entstand.
