Pour son anniversaire, deux surprises de taille attendent le commissaire Larosière : sa fille Juliette, 17 ans, est venue le rejoindre après avoir fugué de chez sa mère, et un colis anonyme a été déposé à son intention. A l'intérieur du paquet se trouve un pied sectionné, avec le nombre 1003 inscrit sous les orteils. La victime est découverte peu après. Il s'agit d'une figurante cachetonnant au théâtre d'Armentières, où le célèbre couple de comédiens Sarah Morlant et Pierre Fougères se produit dans «Dom Juan». Mais les années ont passé : Fougères est alcoolique, Sarah est rongée par la peur de vieillir, et Lucie, sa dame de compagnie, enrage devant les caprices de sa maîtresse. Raoul, le concierge du théâtre, confie alors à Larosière que Julien Sobel, le jeune premier de la pièce, connaissait la victime. Larosière embarque avec joie ce séducteur en herbe qui fait les yeux doux à sa fille. Mais le soir même, un autre meurtre est commis.
