Cela va faire vingt-quatre heures que Molly Grandin, 25 ans, originaire de Syracuse dans l'état de New York, a disparu. L'équipe d'esprits criminels pense que sa disparition est liée à celle de Gail Langston, une jeune femme retrouvée assassinée quelques mois plus tôt... Toutes deux partageaient certaines particularités : elles étudiaient dans la même université, étaient de petite taille, et venaient d'un milieu ouvrier. Leur voiture a été retrouvée abandonnée avec des affaires personnelles, comme si elles devaient s'absenter pendant plusieurs jours. Si l'assassin et le ravisseur sont la même personne, il ne reste que 36 heures aux enquêteurs pour retrouver Molly saine et sauve.
