Two investigators from Peru's Aviation Accidents Commission carry the Cockpit Voice Recorder from Tans Peru Flight 204. The flight crashed during a hail storm on August 23, 2005 in Pucallpa, Peru. Investigators hope the recording will explain why the Boeing 737 plumeted from an altititude of 1500 feet to the forest below, killing 40 of the 98 people on board.

NTSB investigator Al Diehl (played by Thomas Mitchell) examines the remains of United Airlines Flight 173 the day after it crashed into a residential neighborhood during its approach to Portland International Airport. Investigators know the plane had radiod controllers to report a problem with the landing gear lights in the cockpit, and that the crew had been circling the airport while preparing to land with gear that had the potential to collapse. Investigators reach a stunning conclusion; The Captain failed to notice that the plane was running dangerously low on fuel as he focused his attention on the emergency landing to come.
