Die Serie spielt gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts in dem kleinen Weiler "Lark Rise" und in der benachbarten, wohlhabenden Marktstadt Candleford in Oxfordshire.Sie zeigt das alltägliche Leben von Landleuten, Handwerkern und Leuten aus der höheren Schicht. Zudem werden das bunte Treiben der Charaktere in ihrem Alltag, Liebesgeschichten, Nöte und Konkurrenzdenken beschrieben. Die Erzählung findet aus den Augen der 16 Jährigen Laura Timmins statt, wie sie Lark Rise verlässt um in Candleford in ein neues Leben unter dem Schutz ihrer Tante , der unabhängigen, quirligen Dorcas Lane, welche die Leiterin des Postamtes von Candleford ist zu starten. Schnell lernt sie dabei die Unterschiede zwischen den traditionellen Landleuten von Lark Rise und dem zukunftsorientierten Candleford kennen...
