Der Architekt Alex hat für sich und seine zweite Gattin Kim ein märchenhaftes Herrschaftshaus gefunden. Zum Heim wird es auch für das achtjährige Scheidungskind Sally , das in Kim eine Ersatzmama finden soll. Nur der Gärtner des Anwesens weiss, dass das Gemäuer noch weiteren Bewohnern ein Dach bietet. Und die haben den vorherigen Besitzer von Blackwood Manor und zwei weitere Opfer das Leben gekostet. Vom Hunger nach den Zähnen von Kindern erfüllt kriechen sie bei Dunkelheit aus ihren Löchern im Kellerofen. Sally begeht den verhängnisvollen Fehler, die Ofentür zu öffnen.
Auf Guillermo del Toro, Regisseur und Produzent von Horrorfilmen wie «Pan's Labyrinth» für ein anspruchsvolles Publikum, hat die TV-Produktion «Don't Be Afraid of the Dark» von 1973 ihrerzeit einen prägenden Einfluss ausgeübt. Als Produzent und Drehbuchautor legte er 2011 die Geschichte neu auf, reicherte sie abendfüllend an und übergab die Regie einem kanadischen Debütanten. Dieser durfte mit Guy Pierce und Katie Holmes in den Hauptrollen der erwachsenen Hausbewohner veritable Stars dirigieren. Die junge Hauptdarstellerin Bailee Madison konnte mit diesem Horror-Remake einen weiteren Schritt in ihrer jungen Karriere machen. Sie wird demnächst mit einer grossen Nebenrolle in der Sitcom «Trophy Wife» regelmässig im Vorabendprogramm von SRF zwei anzutreffen sein.
Guillermo del Toros aktuelles Projekt ist die Fernsehserie «The Strain» um einen alten Blutsauger und was er mit New York und seinen Bewohnern Dunkles im Sinne hat. Über eine Ausstrahlung auf einem deutschsprachigen Free-TV-Kanal ist zurzeit noch nichts bekannt.

Hintergrund: Co-Autor Guillermo del Toro gibt als Statist einen der Flugzeug-Passagiere in der Reihe hinter Sally. Im Original verleiht er auch einer der Kreaturen im Film seine Stimme. Guillermo erklärte, dass ihn der walisische Horror-Schriftsteller Arthur Machen ("Der große Pan"), den er bewundert, zu Teilen seiner Geschichte inspirierte. Die Runen, die auf dem Stein zu sehen sind, unter dem die Monster leben, sind aus dem Runenalphabet und bedeuten: "Fürchte dich!". Der Film basiert auf dem gleichnamigen TV-Film aus dem Jahr 1973. Kritik: "Kinderalbtraum und unheimliche Gute-Nacht-Geschichte verschmelzen zu einem kreatürlichen Filmwesen, das eher dem Mainstream-Horror als dem Fantastischen angehört. Wie in 'The Devil's Backbone' und 'Pans Labyrinth' ist seine Perspektive die der kindlichen Hauptfigur, die in einer abweisenden Umgebung gefährlichen Geheimnissen nachspürt. Sally entdeckt das Gespenstische nicht in einer Parallelwelt, sondern im eigenen Zuhause. Das Heim ist das Unheimliche in 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark'." (kino-zeit.de)

LES CRÉATURES DE L'OMBRE, téléfilm d'épouvante des années 1970 réalisé par John Newland, est à l'origine de ce long métrage coécrit par le Mexicain Guillermo del Toro ; de ceux que l'on n'oublie pas, selon le réalisateur du LABYRINTHE DE PAN, qui dit être hanté par celui-ci depuis son enfance. Guillermo del Toro a produit et coécrit avec Matthew Robbins (LE CONCERT) cette sombre variation sur la légende de la petite souris. Il en a confié la réalisation à Troy Nixey, illustrateur de comic books ("Only the End of the World Again") qui signe ici son premier long métrage où il explore le thème des peurs originelles et des blessures de l'enfance. Recréant le climat old school du gothique à l'anglaise - manoir aux corridors interminables, grincements de porte, toiles d'araignée, jardins ténébreux, etc. -, le réalisateur provoque la peur autant par ce qu'il montre que par ce qu'il suggère.
