Zu Beginn der 1990er Jahre hat sich der jugendliche Christopher Wallace bereits einen Ruf in seinem Viertel in Brooklyn erarbeitet, vor allem als Drogendealer. Mit der Volljährigkeit folgt ein Aufenthalt im Gefängnis, wegen Kokainhandels. Nach dieser Erfahrung möchte er versuchen, sein Leben in andere Bahnen zu lenken, am liebsten mit seiner Begabung zum Sprechgesang. Als er durch eine glückliche Fügung mit dem ambitionierten Produzenten Sean "Puffy" Combs zusammenkommt, lässt der musikalische Erfolg nicht lange auf sich warten. Aus "Biggie Smalls", wie sich Christopher Wallace als Rapper anfangs nennt, wird "Notorious B.I.G.", und das erste Soloalbum wird zu einem Sensationserfolg. Doch allzu schnell verschwimmen die Grenzen zwischen den harten Songs über Gewalt, Drogen und Sex und dem realen Leben, das von Exzessen und Konflikten geprägt ist.

Regisseur George Tillman jr. zeichnet in seinem Biopic das Leben des einflussreichen US-amerikanischen Rap-Musikers Christopher Wallace nach, auch bekannt als: "Biggie", "Biggie Smalls", "Big Poppa", "B.I.G"', "Notorious B.I.G." oder "Frank White". Dabei behandelt er sowohl dessen schwierige Jugend, seinen künstlerischen Aufstieg und Erfolg, seine Ehen und Affären, seine Freundschaft und spätere Feindschaft mit Tupac Shakur wie auch seinen gewaltsamen, von Geheimnissen umwobenen Tod. Ein Film, aufregend, dramatisch und ereignisreich wie dieses besondere Leben, das er abbildet. Unter Beteiligung von weithin bekannten Stars wie Anthony Mackie und Angela Bassett.

Es erzählt die kurze Lebensgeschichte des bekannten Künstlers, der mit nur 24 Jahren erschossen wurde. Neben guter darstellerischer Leistung weiß der Film durch eine interessante Aufarbeitung der Geschichte zu überzeugen, wenngleich er wenig Antworten zu tiefgreifenderen Fragen liefert." (MovieMaze) Die emotionale Darstellung der Biographie von "The Notorious B.I.G." gewährt tiefe Einblicke in das Leben der Raplegende. Die Musik des verstorbenen Künstlers kommt hierbei nicht zu kurz. Produziert wurde der Film unter anderem von Sean Combs (besser bekannt als Puff Daddy/P.Diddy), welcher B.I.G. zum kommerziellen Erfolg verhalf. Die Wahl des Hauptdarstellers fiel nach ausführlichem Casting auf den Untergrund-Rapper Jamal Gravy Woolard, der für seine Rolle als übergewichtiger Superstar 25 Kilo zulegte. Für die Darstellung des jungen Notorious B.I.G. konnte Christopher Jordan Wallace gewonnen werden, der Sohn der Raplegende aus dessen Ehe mit R&B-Sängerin Faith Evans.
