«Fuck Tha Police» ist ihre Hymne, angriffig ihr Bandname: «N.W.A. - Niggaz Wit' Attitude». Sechs junge Afroamerikaner aus dem Kampfgebiet der Drogengangs in Los Angeles begründen Ende der 1980er-Jahre die Stilrichtung des «Gangsta Rap». In derben Texten thematisieren sie ihren Alltag zwischen Polizeigewalt, Rassismus sowie den Feden bewaffneter Gangs und teuren Schlitten, heisse Bräute und sich selbst.
Mit dem Erfolg schleicht sich Missgunst ein, Ice Cube (gespielt von seinem Sohn im richtigen Leben, O'Shea Jackson Jr.) setzt sich ab und feiert als einzelner Rapper sowie später auch als Schauspieler Erfolge, Dr. Dre wird zum Starproduzenten und Entdecker von Stars wie Snoop Dogg und Eminem. Das schillerndste Bandmitglied, den zügellose Rapper Eazy-E , holt das Schicksal auf tragische Weise ein.
Die Wurzeln von Regisseur F. Gary Gray sind dieselben wie jene seiner stimmig porträtierten Helden, begann er doch seine Karriere mit Rapvideos, unter anderem von Ice Cube. Dies mag erklären, weshalb Gray den richtigen Tonfall findet, wie auch «Die Weltwoche» befand: «F. Gary Gray und seine Autoren sind ganz nah an ihren Figuren und deren Wut und Enthemmung. Sie werden nicht verklärt, sind wie Boxer auf Speed, reden, wie sie rappen, und benehmen sich wahnhaft wie ekstatische Flammen, als triebe sie eine panische Angst vor dem 'Einfrieren'. 'Straight Outta Compton' macht mit drangsalierenden Cops, rüden Gangmitgliedern, windigen Ausbeutern, wilden Girls und Verbal-Tornados voller physischer Präsenz die Entstehung des Reality-Rap nachvollziehbar.»
Der berüchtigtsten Band des Westcoast-Rap gelang der Sprung direkt auf Platz 1 der US-Charts, das «Rolling Stone» führt sie auf Platz 83 einer Liste der «100 Greatest Artists of All Time» und die Rapper wurden 2016 in die «Rock and Roll Hall of Fame» aufgenommen. Der offene Bandenkrieg in Compton und Süd-Los Angeles überhaupt ist mittlerweile Geschichte, Rassenunruhen und Polizeigewalt hingegen machen auch heute noch betrübliche Schlagzeilen. Insofern hat die Protestmusik von «N.W.A.» nach wie vor eine gewisse Daseinsberechtigung.

Regie bei "Straight Outta Compton" führte F. Gary Gray, der bereits in den 90er-Jahren Musikvideos von Künstlern wie Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Coolio oder Queen Latifah drehte. 1995 inszenierte er seinen ersten Spielfilm "Friday" mit Ice Cube und Chris Tucker in den Hauptrollen. Es folgten Kinohits wie "Set It Off", "The Italian Job" oder "Be Cool". 2017 inszenierte er das Action-Abenteuer "Fast & Furious 8". "Animierend und vital blickt dieses biografische Drama zurück auf eine Ära, in der der Gangsta-Rap begründet wurde und Übergriffe der Polizei so brisant wie heute waren. In guter Hollywoodtradition erinnert sich der Film selektiv, betreibt auch Legendenbildung, wirkt aber in der Zeichnung seiner gefährlichen Milieus - von der Straße bis hin zur Musikbranche - so authentisch wie in seinen fiebrig-intensiven Auftrittssequenzen."
