Ordeal By Innocence
Jacko Argyle (Gorman) - convicted of murdering his adoptive mother Rachel (Seymour) went to the gallows protesting his innocence. Jacko’s family are shocked when, some months later, stranger Dr Arthur Calgary (Rhind Tutt) proves that Jacko did have an alibi he was with him at the time of the murder.
Widower Leo Argyle (Lawson) is about to be remarried to his secretary, and Miss Marple’s former housemaid, Gwenda Vaughan (Stevenson). Miss Marple arrives at Sunny Point, the family home, for the wedding and discovers that, not only are all of the Argyle children adopted, but that Rachel was not liked by any of them.
Hester (Leonidas) is on medication for emotional problems, Mary (Stansfield) lives at Sunny Point with her resentful and money-hungry husband Philip (Armitage) and Bobby (Riley) strives desperately to hold the family together. Meanwhile, Tina (Mbatha-Raw) and Micky (Dick) keep their distance. The family seems to function much better though without the hostile presence of Rachel, giving them all a motive for murder. And none of them have a cast iron alibi.
When the finger of suspicion rests on Gwenda, described as Rachel’s worst enemy by housekeeper Kirsten (Steadman), she decides to enlist her old friend Miss Marple in some sleuthing. Gwenda is murdered before she has the chance to reveal the identity of the killer. But more heartbreak is yet to come, as the family are torn apart by the very darkest of secrets.
. . . Miss Marple accompanies Lady Virginia Revel to a weekend party at her family home of Chimneys ? a house once prized for its diplomatic gatherings until a diamond was stolen there over twenty years ago. The tenacious career politician, George Lomax, has persuaded Virginia?s father, Lord Caterham to host a gathering for an important Austrian Count, Ludwig Von Stainach. Virginia, who is the daughter of Miss Marple?s late cousin, must decide by the end of the weekend whether to accept George Lomax?s proposal of marriage or to follow her heart and the courtship of another more adventurous suitor, Anthony Cade. Lomax is dismayed by the odd array of guests who have been invited and castigates his affable assistant Bill Eversleigh, who also has a soft spot for Virginia. Along with Miss Marple there is the socialist spinster Miss Blenkinsopp and Caterham?s formidable eldest daughter Bundle as well as the quietly inscrutable maidservant Treadwell. Count Ludwig takes a personal interest in Chimneys and after dinner Caterham entertains discussions about the sale of the house and a deal is drawn up. But in the middle of the night the house guests are stirred from their beds by security and the Count cannot be found. The sound of a gunshot is heard from a secret passageway in the house and Count Ludwig is found dead in the arms of Anthony Cade. Why is Cade at Chimneys - is Virginia?s suitor being framed for murder? A Chief Inspector arrives from Scotland Yard to investigate, taking Miss Marple under his wing and together they discover a coded message in the pocket of the dead Count which could unlock the mystery. But when the bones of a young servant murdered over twenty years ago are uncovered Marple begins to realise that the secret of Chimneys is darker than even she had realised.
Miss Marple is faced with her greatest challenge yet when she receives instructions from an old friend, the recently deceased Mr Rafiel, to investigate a ?possible crime?. But there?s a catch - she has not been told what the crime is. Instead, she is booked onto a mystery coach tour to gather clues. Miss Marple takes her nephew Raymond West to accompany her on the tour as Mr Rafiel warns that danger may threaten. It begins to dawn on them both that all the passengers have been placed there for a reason, as their lives interconnect in various ways. Even more significantly, everyone is connected to a young girl, Verity Hunt, who went missing during the war. They also realise that every destination on the tour is significant and start to piece together information about Verity, finding out that she fled from a nun?s sanctuary in the dead of night to be with her German lover, Mr Rafiel?s son Michael, and was never seen again. Is it mere coincidence that Verity also lodged with Sydney Lumley before he met his young wife Margaret? Margaret?s resemblance to Verity shocks the elderly Mr Raeburn, ex butler to the caustic lady of the manor Amanda Dalrymple, who threw out Verity for ?stealing? and is now travelling with an obsequious lawyer, Derek Turnbull. With the help of young detective Colin Hards, Miss Marple and Raymond piece together the secrets of the past to fulfil a promise to her dear old friend.
