Der smarte Detective Sam Tyler findet sich nach einem schwerwiegenden Unfall auf mysteriöse Weise im Jahr 1973 wieder. Sam Tyler lässt sich für einige Tage krank schreiben. Er fühlt sich seltsam und unwohl - jedenfalls seltsamer als sonst. Sam leidet unter Halluzinationen. Doch bevor er zu sich kommen kann, muss er dringend einen Fall übernehmen. Denn als er in die Arbeit zurückkehrt, trifft er auf einen Mann, der sich gerade erhängen will. Sam erfährt, dass dessen Frau und Tochter gekidnappt wurden und nun als Geiseln gehalten werden. Während er die gesamte A-Division befragt, erhält Sam Einblick in einen anderen Mordfall. Nachdem er den Details des Mordfalles auf den Grund geht, erfährt er nach und nach, wie es zu der Geiselnahme der beiden Frauen kommen konnte.
