A team member recovers a crumpled Oxy-generator from the Florida Everglades. This evidence will help determine what exactly caused ValuJet Flight 592 to crash minutes after taking off from Miami International Airport with 110 passengers and crew on board. The oxygen generators are installed in passenger planes to provide emergency oxygen. They produce a chemical reaction that produces instense heat. Investigators wonder if they somehow contributed to the crash.

NTSB Investigator Al Diehl (played by Thomas Mitchell, left) and another NTSB investigator carry the FDR and CVR from United Airlines Flight 173. The boxes will be shipped to NTSB labs in Washington. The data should explain why the commercial jet, carrying 181 passengers and 8 crew crashed into a wooded area 6 miles short of Portland International Airport. The crew had reported a problem with their landing gear as they made their approach to Portland, and decided to circle the airport as they attempted to trouble shoot the problem. Investigators learn that while circling, the DC-8 ran out of fuel.
