Die Graffiti des Street-Art-Künstlers Banksy zieren Fassaden auf der ganzen Welt und erzielen in Kunstauktionen Höchstpreise. Doch niemand weiß, wer sich hinter dem Phantom versteckt. Dann macht sich ein französischer Hobbyfilmer auf, einen Film über den legendären Guerilla-Künstler zu drehen. Dessen Film ist jedoch so dilettantisch, dass Banksy schließlich selbst das Projekt übernimmt. Das Ergebnis ist einer der spannendsten Dokumentarfilme der letzten Jahre. Geschickt spielt das Regiedebüt Banksys mit grundlegenden Fragen nach der Realität im Dokumentarfilm und den Unterschied von Kunst und Inszenierung.

Der Street-Art-Künstler Banksy ist ein Phantom. Seine Graffiti finden sich auf Hauswänden in der ganzen Welt, seine Installationen werden von Tausenden besucht, ihre Exponate erzielen in Kunstauktionen Höchstpreise. Doch bis heute weiß niemand, wer hinter dem gefeierten Künstler steckt, der nur vermummt vor die Kameras tritt. Schließlich macht sich ein französischer Hobbyfilmer namens Thierry Guetta mit seiner Videokamera auf den Weg, Banksy aufzuspüren und einen Film über ihn zu drehen. Tatsächlich gelingt es Guetta, mit Banksy in Kontakt zu treten und über Monate hinweg seine oft illegalen Kunstaktionen zu dokumentieren. Aber dann kommt alles anders als geplant: Als Thierry Guetta seinen fertigen Film präsentiert, stellt sich das Opus Magnum der Street-Art-Kultur als veritables Desaster heraus, denn der Franzose ist nicht nur ein dilettantischer Regisseur, sondern auch ein inkompetenter Cutter.

Banksy zieht die Notbremse und übernimmt das Projekt. Ab jetzt richtet er die Kamera auf Guetta, der sich selbst als Künstler versuchen soll. Da dieser weder zeichnen noch malen kann, legt sich Guetta eine Armada von Praktikanten und studentischen Aushilfen zu, die seine zunehmend größenwahnsinnigen Pläne für eine Ausstellung umsetzen. Das Ergebnis übertrifft alle Erwartungen. Guettas Ausstellung mit plagiierten, per "Banksy - Exit through the Gift Shop" ist der erste Film des international gefeierten Künstlers Banksy.
