Nach über 50 Karrierejahren, mit mehr als 60 Filmen und drei Oscars gilt Jack Nicholson längst als Schauspielerlegende. Doch er bewegt sich außerhalb jeder Norm. Unberechenbar, ungreifbar entzieht er sich jeder Festlegung. Mal zeigt er sich liebenswert, mal unheimlich, mal verführerisch oder furchteinflößend. Doch all seine ungleichen Rollen haben eines gemeinsam: In ihnen offenbart sich Jack Nicholson. Alle Charaktere, die Nicholson im Laufe seines Lebens gespielt hat, bilden einen Teil seiner eigenen Persönlichkeit ab: Während seiner langjährigen Karriere, die von "Easy Rider" bis "Batman", von "Einer flog über das Kuckucksnest" bis "Shining" zahlreiche Kultfilme hervorbrachte, zementierte Nicholson seinen Ruf als einer der talentiertesten Schauspieler seiner Generation.
Filmrollen, Frauen, Drogen - Nicholson hat wenig ausgelassen in seinem Leben. Er hat fünf Kinder von vier Frauen und war nur einmal verheiratet, von 1962 bis 1968 mit Schauspielkollegin Sandra Knight. Mit Anjelica Huston, Tochter von US-Regisseur John Huston, führte er jahrelang eine bewegte Beziehung. Sie zerbrach endgültig, als er die beste Freundin seiner Tochter Jennifer, das Model Rebecca Broussard, schwängerte. Nicholson ist 1937 als uneheliches Kind einer jungen Tänzerin in New Jersey zur Welt gekommen. Er wuchs bei ihren Eltern auf und erfuhr erst mit 37 Jahren, dass seine ältere "Schwester" June in Wahrheit seine Mutter war.
Seine große Hollywoodkarriere fing klein an, mit Botenjobs in der Trickfilmabteilung von Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Eine seiner ersten Filmrollen verdankte er dem Trash-Meister Roger Corman in dem Gruselstreifen "Kleiner Laden voller Schrecken". Seinen Durchbruch feierte er als alkoholsüchtiger Rechtsanwalt George Hanson in dem Roadmovie "Easy Rider". Die Dokumentation zeigt zahlreiche Filmausschnitte und unveröffentlichtes Archivmaterial. Erstmals wird deutlich, was sich hinter dem berühmtesten Lächeln Hollywoods verbirgt. Es ist das Gesicht eines Rastlosen, der von frühester Kindheit an gelernt hat zu verbergen, wer er wirklich ist.
