Komödie
Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams), Moderator einer erfolgreichen politischen Talkshow, entschliesst sich auf Druck seiner Fans dazu, sich als unabhängiger Präsidentschaftskandidat aufstellen zu lassen. Unterstützt von seinem Manager Jack Menken (Christopher Walken) gelingt es Dobbs, seine sachorientierte Kampagne zum Erfolg zu führen. Bei der abschliessenden Fernsehdebatte der Kandidaten kann er sich endgültig als Sieger durchsetzen. In allen Umfragen erzielt er Spitzenwerte. Aber sein Sieg ist nicht nur auf seine charismatische Person, sondern auch auf einen Fehler im Wahlcomputer zurückzuführen. Die fehlerhafte Software stammt von der aufstrebenden Computerfirma Delacroy.
Als eine Programmiererin von Delacroy, Eleanor Green (Laura Linney), dem Versagen des Systems auf die Spur kommt, informiert sie umgehend ihren Chef (Jeff Goldblum). Dieser aber denkt gar nicht daran, den Erfolg seines Unternehmens durch das öffentliche Eingeständnis des Fehlers zu gefährden. Ihm ist ein unrecht gewählter Präsident allemal lieber als fallende Aktien. Eleanor Green beschliesst, Dobbs über den Sachverhalt aufzuklären. Damit kann er selbst entscheiden, wie er sich verhalten will. Doch es erweist sich als gar nicht so einfach, zum Sieger und seinem siegestrunkenen Team durchzudringen.

Barry Levinson zeichnet verantwortlich für Drehbuch und Regie bei dieser Komödie, die die Lachmuskeln der Zuschauer arg strapaziert. Dies liegt nicht zuletzt an dem hervorragend besetzten Hauptdarsteller: Robin Williams als Stand-Up-Comedian Tom Dobbs, der plötzlich Präsident der USA wird.
