"Varus, gib mir meine Legionen zurück!", soll der römische Kaiser Augustus nach der verlorenen Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald im Jahre 9 n. Chr. ausgerufenen haben. Mit der vernichtenden Niederlage war entschieden: Nie wieder würden Römer in Germanien Fuß fassen; der Anfang vom Ende der römischen Vorherrschaft in Europa. So jedenfalls steht es in den Schulbüchern. Tatsächlich machten Archäologen jüngst eine spektakuläre Entdeckung im Harz.

Tausende Fundstücke römischer Herkunft, im Waldboden verborgen, beweisen: Die Römer haben sich nach der Varusschlacht nicht hinter ihrem Grenzwall, dem Limes, versteckt. Vielmehr kam es 230 Jahre nach dem angeblichen Vernichtungsschlag des Cheruskerfürsten Arminius erneut zu einer blutigen Schlacht zwischen Römern und Germanen. Wissenschaftler sprechen von einem "Jahrhundertfund". Hatte Arminius die Besatzer doch nicht ein für alle Mal aus dem Land geworfen? Mithilfe der Fundstücke rekonstruiert ZDF-History das Kampfgeschehen von damals. Muss die Geschichte am Ende neu geschrieben werden?...
