Die bewegend und schonungslos erzählte Geschichte des Sklavenrebellen Nat Turner, ausgezeichnet mit dem Preis der Jury beim Sundance Festival. - Bereits als Sklavenjunge lernt Nat Turner, die Bibel zu lesen. Eine Fähigkeit, die ihm Jahre später einen besonderen Job einbringt: Im Auftrag seines finanziell klammen Besitzers Samuel (Armie Hammer) soll der tief gläubige Nat (Nate Parker) auf anderen Plantagen das Wort Gottes lehren. Das soll die Leibeigenen gottesfürchtig und gefügig machen. Doch als Nat die unermessliche Brutalität der Sklavenhalter erlebt, wächst in ihm der Drang, die Unterdrückten zu befreien.
