Psychodrama, Thriller
Bisher verlief das Leben von Margaret Hall (Tilda Swinton) in geregelten Bahnen. Drei Kinder, der kranke Schwiegervater (Peter Donat) und das große Haus am idyllischen Lake Tahoe wollen versorgt werden, während ihr Mann monatelang auf See ist. In letzter Zeit macht sich Margaret allerdings Sorgen um ihren ältesten Sohn Beau (Jonathan Tucker), der eine Affäre mit dem schwulen Barbesitzer Darby Reese (Josh Lucas) begonnen hat. Trotz ihrer inständigen Bitten ist Reese nicht bereit, das Verhältnis zu beenden. Als Margaret nur Stunden später seine Leiche in unmittelbarer Nähe ihres Hauses findet, zögert die besorgte Mutter nicht lange. Kurz entschlossen lässt sie den Toten im See verschwinden.
Doch schon tags darauf wird die Leiche von Passanten am Ufer entdeckt. Am nächsten Morgen zieren Schlagzeilen die Frontseite des Lokalblättchens. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hat Margaret immer noch nicht den Mut gefunden, mit ihrem Sohn Beau über das Vorgefallene zu reden. Und auch der schüchterne Teenager hüllt sich in schamhaftes Schweigen. Da taucht der Erpresser Alek Spera (Goran Visnjic) vor Margarets Tür auf und präsentiert ihr ein kompromittierendes Video: Eine heiße Sexszene zwischen dem Toten und ihrem Sohn. Wenn die entsetzte Mutter nicht bereit ist, 50.000 Dollar bis zum nächsten Nachmittag auf den Tisch zu legen, wird das Videoband bei der Polizei landen.
Verzweifelt versucht Margaret, das Geld in so kurzer Zeit aufzutreiben, aber die Bank stellt sich quer und das Ultimatum droht zu verstreichen ...
