Sean Boswell flieht nach Tokio, um in den USA einer Haftstrafe wegen illegaler Autorennen zu entgehen. Doch auch hier findet er schnell Anschluss in der lokalen Rennszene. Anders als in den USA, werden in Tokio jedoch Drift-Rennen gefahren, was Sean bereits bei seinem ersten Rennen gegen den Drift-King Takashi auf direkten Kollisionskurs mit der japanischen Unterwelt bringt. Der Außenseiter Sean Boswell (Lucas Black) nutzt illegale Autorennen, um seinem grauen Alltag wenigstens für kurze Zeit zu entfliehen. Dies geht jedoch nicht lange gut. Denn die US-Behörden stellen ihn vor eine schwierige Wahl: Entweder Gefängnis - oder er zieht zu seinem Vater, einem US- Marinesoldaten, in Tokio.
Dort eingetroffen, werden Sean sämtliche Aktivitäten rund um Autos verboten - aber er trifft auf Twinkie (Bow Wow, auch als Shad Moss bekannt), der ihn in die Auto- und Tuner-Szene Tokios einführt. Die Rennen dort sind nicht das, was Sean bisher kannte: In engen Parkhäusern und dem dichten Verkehr Tokios ist es vor allem ein guter Drift, der zählt. Der Zufall will es, dass er gegen den "Drift-King" D.K. Takashi (Brian Tee) - dessen Onkel Kopf der japanischen Mafia ist - antritt. Sean verliert und fährt dabei auch noch den geliehenen Wagen seines neuen Geschäftspartners Han (Sung Kang) zu Schrott. Han vertraut ihm dennoch und beschließt, ihn unter seine Fittiche zu nehmen und ihm das Driften beizubringen.
Mittlerweile hat Sean Neela (Nathalie Kelley) kennengelernt, die nur den einen Fehler hat: Sie ist die Freundin von Takashi. Sean kann dennoch nicht widerstehen und wird von Takashi brutal niedergeschlagen. Als sich Neela nun ganz auf seine Seite schlägt, geraten Han und Sean ins Visier der Yakuza, und schon bald geht es um viel mehr, als Takashi einmal bei einem Drift-Rennen zu schlagen. "Tokyo Drift", Teil drei von sieben Filmen der "The Fast and the Furious"- Reihe, ist ein Werk des Regisseurs Justin Lin, der auch für die drei folgenden Teile "Fast and Furious - Neues Modell: Originalteile" (2009), "Fast & Furious 5" (2011) und "Fast & Furious 6" (2013) der Reihe verantwortlich ist. Im Juli 2016 soll mit "Star Treck Beyond" eine weitere Regiearbeit von ihm ins Kino kommen. Lucas Black schlüpfte in "Fast & Furious 7" erneut in die Rolle des Sean.
Der Starttermin des achten Teils der Tuning-Blockbuster "The Fast and the Furious" ist für April 2017 vorgesehen. Regie soll F. Gary Gary ("The Italian Job") führen, und natürlich sind Vin Diesel, Kurt Russell und Dwayne Johnson mit von der Partie. Man munkelt, dass auch Teil 9 und 10 bereits geplant sind, die jeweils im April 2019 und 2021 erscheinen sollen.

Atemberaubende Auto-Stunts, rasante Schnitte und eine auf Hochglanz polierte Optik: Wie schon die beiden Vorgänger wurde auch der dritte Teil der beliebten 'The Fast and the Furious'-Reihe in grandioser Art und Weise inszeniert - diesmal vom taiwanesischen Regie-Newcomer Justin Lin. Das faszinierende PS-Spektakel wartet in seiner dritten Auflage mit einigen Neuerungen auf. Das Handlungsgeschehen wurde von den USA in die japanische Mega-Metropole Tokyo verlagert und auch der Cast wurde komplett ausgetauscht. Bei den Dreharbeiten gab es einen enormen Verschleiß an Autoreifen - ungefähr 2000 Stück fielen den rasanten Auto-Actionszenen zum Opfer. Zudem wurden mehr als 100 der getunten Rennflitzer, die im Film zu sehen sind, demoliert. Eine teure Angelegenheit: Alleine der Mazda RX-7, der im Film von Han gefahren wird, hatte einen Wert von 150 000 Dollar. Da bis auf zwei Schauspieler der gesamte Cast kein japanisch sprach, mussten die Darsteller zum Sprachunterricht, um sich einen authentischen Tokyo-Slang anzueignen. Zudem mussten die Schauspieler bei dem U.S. Formula Drift Champion Rhys Millen und dem Stunt-Fahrer Tanner Foust intensive Drift-Trainingsstunden nehmen.
