Vin Diesel und Paul Walker brillieren in diesem fulminanten Auftakt der PS-starken "Fast and Furious"-Reihe in mitreißender Weise. Um einer Bande dreister Truck-Diebe das Handwerk zu legen, ermittelt der Polizist Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker) unter dem Pseudonym des Mechanikers Brian Spinner in der Tuningszene von Los Angeles.
Beherrscht wird die Szene der tiefergelegten PS-Schleudern und Geschwindigkeits-Junkies vom meisterlichen und nervenstarken Fahrer Dominic Torreto (Vin Diesel). Bei der Teilnahme an einem illegalen Straßenrennen verliert Brian zwar sein Auto, kann aber, als sie von der Polizei entdeckt werden, den Respekt und das Vertrauen von Torreto gewinnen, indem er ihm zur Flucht verhilft. Während Brian mit Torreto und seinem Team ein eigentlich schrottreifes Auto für die legendären "Race Wars" aufrüstet, beginnt er sich in der Gruppe heimisch zu fühlen und verliebt sich in Torretos kleine Schwester Mia (Jordana Brewster). Doch alle seine Ermittlungen weisen auf Torreto als Drahtzieher der LKW-Überfälle hin, so dass Brian sich zwischen seiner Pflicht als Polizist und seiner Freundschaft zu einem Kriminellen entscheiden muss... "The Fast and the Furious" ist der actiongeladene Startschuss für eine der kommerziell erfolgreichsten Filmreihen aller Zeiten. Für das spannungsreiche Spektakel mit atemberaubenden Autostunts wurden weder Kosten noch Mühen gescheut: An manchen Rennszenen waren über 1500 Autos beteiligt, und es wurden sogar ganze Straßenzüge in gedeckten Farben umgestrichen, um die Farbigkeit der getunten Autos hervor zu heben.
Mittlerweile besteht die "Fast and Furious"-Reihe aus sechs Teilen, in denen Paul Walker, der durch die Franchise weltberühmt wurde, eine tragende Rolle spielte. Auch im siebten Teil sollte er im Juli diesen Jahres wieder als Brian O'Connor auf der Leinwand erscheinen, doch sein tragischer Unfalltod am 30. November 2013 erschütterte Freunde, Familie, Filmkollegen und Fans. Wegen überhöhter Geschwindigkeit prallte der Porsche Carrera GT, in dem Paul Walker als Beifahrer saß, gegen einen Baum und einen Laternenmast, um anschließend in Flammen aufzugehen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren die Dreharbeiten zu "Fast and Furious 7" zur Hälfte abgeschlossen. Nach einer Drehpause - aus Respekt vor Paul Walker - soll der Film nun im April 2015 mit den bereits fertiggestellten Szenen des Schauspielers in die Kinos kommen.
Voraussichtlich soll die Figur des Brian O'Connor aber nicht ums Leben kommen, um Paul Walker damit zumindest im Kino ein unsterbliches Denkmal zu setzen. An den beiden kommenden Samstagen präsentiert die "Filmnacht im ZDF" am 24. Mai 2014 "2 Fast 2 Furious" und am 31. Mai 2014 "Fast an Furious 4 - Neues Modell. Originalteile.".

Paul Walker schaffte mit der Rolle des Undercover-Ermittlers Brian O'Conner seinen Kino-Durchbruch. Seither war er nicht nur in den Fortsetzungen mit von der Partie, sondern machte auch in zahlreichen anderen Action-Krachern wie "Running Scared" von sich reden, bevor er 2013 bei einem Unfall starb. Für die Rolle des testosteron-geladenen Bandenführers Dominic Toretto war Vin Diesel geradezu die Idealbesetzung, sie etablierte den kahlrasierten Muskelprotz mit afro- und italo-amerikanischen Wurzeln als Action-Helden der neuen Generation.
