Die andalusische und die marokkanische Küste sind als Urlaubsparadies beliebt. Dennoch war bis vor wenigen Jahren weder der Wissenschaft noch der Öffentlichkeit bekannt, welch ein Naturparadies die Meerenge von Gibraltar, eine schmale Wasserstraße zwischen den Kontinenten Europa und Afrika, darstellt: Hier leben mehr Walarten auf engstem Raum als irgendwo sonst auf der Erde. Doch die Meerenge ist auch ein Nadelöhr des globalisierten Warenflusses mit einer weltweit einmaligen Dichte an Schiffsverkehr: Täglich durchqueren über 300 riesige Containerschiffe die Meerenge mit hohem Tempo. Die Wale werden gerammt, geraten in die Schrauben, werden durch Abwässer vergiftet oder verlieren ihre Nahrungsgrundlage durch Überfischung. "The Last Giants" überrascht mit erstaunlichen Fakten und faszinierenden Unterwasseraufnahmen von Walen und Delfinen. Zugleich erzählt der Film die Geschichte einer einzelnen Frau, der ehemaligen Schweizer Modeschöpferin Katharina Heyer, die sich seit über einem Jahrzehnt für das bedrohte Naturparadies vor Europas Küste einsetzt.
