Als der Autor Ned Weeks 1981 nach Fire Island reist, um den Geburtstag seines Bekannten Craig zu feiern, ahnt er während der ausgelassenen Schwulenparty noch nicht, dass ein heimtückisches Virus dem promisken Selbstverständnis der Homosexuellen ein jähes Ende setzen wird.
Am folgenden Tag bricht Craig am Strand zusammen. Ned liest in der «New York Times» über eine neue Krebsart, der bereits über vierzig schwule Männer zum Opfer gefallen sind. Er sucht jene Ärztin auf, die sich der Krankheit und ihrer Opfer annimmt, Emma Brookner .
Emma ist auf der Suche nach einer Ansprechperson in schwulen Kreisen, da sie dort mit ihrer Besorgnis über die Todesfälle bisher kaum Gehör fand. In Ned hofft sie, den Kontakt zur Szene gefunden zu haben. Doch was Ned und Emma den Homosexuellen New Yorks zu sagen haben, wollen diese tatsächlich nicht hören: Mit grosser Sicherheit wird das Virus, das die neue Krankheit auslöst, sexuell übertragen. Auch als kurz darauf Craig stirbt, ist die Bereitschaft der Szene gering, den Ernst der Lage zu erkennen.
Ned gründet eine Selbsthilfeorganisation und bittet seinen Bruder Ben , ein Anwalt in einer renommierten Kanzlei, ihn im Kampf um Anerkennung zu vertreten. Und er findet den Kontakt zu einem Journalisten der «New York Times», Felix Turner , in den er sich Hals über Kopf verliebt.
Mit seinem Engagement macht sich Ned nicht nur Freunde, denn er kritisiert keineswegs nur die Behörden, sondern auch die vielen schwulen Männer, die sich nicht outen wollen und den Wirbel um den sogenannten Schwulenkrebs möglichst kleinhalten wollen. Dann befürchtet Felix, infiziert zu sein, und Neds Welt gerät ins Wanken.
«The Normal Heart» des US-Regisseurs Ryan Murphy basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Roman und Theaterstück von Larry Kramer, der wiederum das Vorbild für die Figur des hartnäckigen Ned Weeks war. Das Drama wurde 2014 mit einem Emmy als Bester Fernsehfilm ausgezeichnet.
Der Film ist mit Mark Ruffalo, Alfred Molina, Taylor Kitsch, Matt Bomer und Julia Roberts hervorragend besetzt. Roberts spielt hier für einmal eine Rolle weit weg von ihrem Rom-Com-Image. Ruffalo wächst als hartnäckiger, überall aneckender Ned Weeks über sich hinaus.
