Die junge Malerin Ajla aus Sarajevo lernt den Polizisten Danijel auf der Tanzfläche einer Disco kennen. Mit dem Knall einer Bombe verliert die junge Beziehung ihre Unbeschwertheit, als der Bürgerkrieg 1992 auf Bosnien überschlägt. Fortan darf die Liebe der Muslima zum Serben nicht mehr sein.
Als Ajla ihren Danijel wiedersieht, ist sie seine Gefangene. Er hat Ajla in einer Gruppe internierter Frauen erkannt und versucht, sie zu beschützen. Unter dem Vorwand, Offiziere zu verewigen, erhält die Malerin eine Sonderbehandlung, wird einzeln untergebracht, besser verpflegt und vor Zudringlichkeiten geschützt.
In den kommenden Monaten stiehlt Danijel sich für zärtliche Stunden zu zweit davon. Doch die Gefangene und ihr Wächter begegnen sich nicht auf Augenhöhe, in ihr Abhängigkeitsverhältnis mengt sich wie Gift gegenseitiges Misstrauen. Zugleich schöpft Danijels Vorgesetzter und Vater, General Vukojevich, Verdacht.
Actionfilmheldin, UNHCR-Sonderbotschafterin, Ehefrau von Brad Pitt, mehrfache leibliche und Adoptiv-Mutter - dass Angelina Jolie sich auch als Regisseurin einen Namen machen wollte, noch dazu als Amerikanerin mit einem humanitär engagierten Drama aus dem Balkankrieg, sorgte für Häme. Wer «In the Land of Blood and Honey» nicht nach Anhaltspunkten für die Parteilichkeit der angehenden Filmemacherin durchsuchte, zeigte sich überrascht, mit welch sicherer Hand Angelina Jolie in ihrem mutig gewählten Stoff ein kompliziertes Geflecht von Abhängigkeiten vorführte. Hierzulande gelangte der Film nicht in die Kinos, füllte aber gleichwohl Zeitungsspalten. Mochte «Der Bund» auch einer «Feuerwalze des Gutmenschentums» gegenüberstehen, verriet er mit seiner Wertung «insgesamt beeindruckend, aber noch nicht bestechend» doch jenen Respekt, der für Angelina Jolies Regiedebüt Konsens wurde. Im April 2012 wurde die Amerikanerin für ihren Film zur Ehrenbürgerin Sarajevos ernannt.
Angelina Jolie und ihrem nächsten Spielfilm, der Biographie des kriegsgefangenen Olympioniken Louis Zamperini, war in den Kinos der Deutschschweiz mehr Glück beschieden, wo «Unbroken» sich achtbar schlug. Noch 2015 steht die Premiere ihres nächsten Filmes bevor, «By the Sea», in dem sie an der Seite ihres Ehemannes Brad Pitt spielt. Für 2016 hat die Filmemacherin das Drama «Africa» um den Raubhandel mit Elfenbein angekündigt.
