Während einer Routine-Expedition ins All geschieht ein mysteriöser Zwischenfall: Es gibt eine Explosion, und für zwei lange Minuten bricht der Funkkontakt zwischen der NASA und ihren zwei Astronauten Streck (Nick Cassavetes) und Armacost (Johnny Depp) ab. Als die beiden Männer zur Erde und zu ihren Familien zurückkehren, läuft zunächst alles weiter wie gewohnt. Doch schon bald mehren sich die Anzeichen dafür, dass es sich wohl doch um mehr als nur einen gewöhnlichen Unfall im Weltraum handelte. Der ältere der beiden Astronauten, Alex Streck, stirbt Wochen nach dem Vorfall an Herzversagen, wenig später begeht die verzweifelte Witwe (Donna Murphy) Selbstmord. Der jüngere Shuttle-Pilot Spencer Armacost dagegen nimmt einen neuen Job an der Ostküste an. Gemeinsam mit seiner Ehefrau Jillian (Charlize Theron) versucht er, in der Metropole New York heimisch zu werden und die Vergangenheit möglichst schnell zu vergessen.
Während Spencer in seiner neuen Arbeit völlig aufgeht, fühlt sich Jillian jedoch zunehmend unwohl in der riesigen Stadt und in ihrer eleganten Luxuswohnung. Auch Spencer entgleitet ihr zusehends. Er wirkt kühl, abweisend und ... fremd. Die Entdeckung, dass sie schwanger ist, verstärkt ihre Unsicherheit und Einsamkeit nur noch. Als sie eines Tages Besuch von einem entlassenen NASA-Angestellten (Joe Morton) erhält, der ihr einige beunruhigende Informatio-nen über den damaligen Vorfall im All und seine Folgen erzählt, schrillen bei ihr alle Alarmglocken.

Rand Ravich inszenierte diesen Sci-Fi-Thriller der Extraklasse 1998 nach seinem eigenen Drehbuch. Er entwickelte dabei subtil eine intelligente Story, die er wohl dosiert mit Schockelementen versah. Das grandiose Spiel der Hauptdarsteller rundet den Streifen, der die Tradition von Filmen wie "Rosemaries Baby" oder "Schock" fortsetzt, wunderbar ab.
