Fünf Jugendliche verbringen ihren Urlaub in einer abgelegenen Hütte mitten im Wald. Mit dabei sind die schüchterne Dana, die attraktive und frisch blondierte Jules mit ihrem durchtrainierten College-Schwarm Curt, der nachdenkliche Holden und der andauernd bekiffte Marty. Als sie nach der Wegbeschreibung eines wenig vertrauenserweckenden Einheimischen endlich die Hütte erreichen, scheint der Urlaub perfekt. Während eines Trinkspiels muss Dana als Mutprobe den gruseligen Keller betreten, den die Jugendlichen kurz zuvor entdeckt haben. Darin befinden sich mysteriöse Gegenstände, die so gar nicht zu dem Rest der Hütte passen. Nachdem sie lateinische Zeilen aus einem über 100 Jahre alten Buch lesen, scheinen sich die Freunde zu verändern.
Auch außerhalb der Hütte regt sich etwas. Die Aktion der Teenager scheint Zombies aus ihrem feuchten Grab gerufen zu haben, die geradewegs Kurs auf die Hütte nehmen. Was sie allerdings zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht ahnen: Eine Gruppe von Wissenschaftlern überwacht und manipuliert von einem unterirdischem Labor aus jeden ihrer Schritte...

Dana (Kristen Connolly), Jules (Anna Hutchison), Curt (Chris Hemsworth), Holden (Jesse Williams) und Marty (Fran Kranz) verbringen das Wochenende in einer Hütte tief im Wald. Was die fünf Freunde nicht wissen: Alle ihre Handlungen werden beobachtet, ja, sogar gelenkt. Bald taucht eine Zombie-Familie auf. Der Auftrag: morden! Sitterson (Richard Jenkins) und die "Direktorin" (Sigourney Weaver) überwachen den "Fortschritt". Aber wozu das Ganze? Regisseur Drew Goddard und Drehbuchautor Joss Whedon kreierten das Drehbuch für "The Cabin in the Woods" innerhalb von drei Tagen: sie schlossen sich gemeinsam in ein Hotelzimmer ein und kamen mit dem fertigen Script wieder heraus.
