Die drei Filmstudenten Heather, Michael und Joshua, brechen in ein kleines Dorf in Maryland auf, um der Legende der dort in den Wäldern hausenden "Blair"-Hexe auf die Spur zu kommen. Sie wollen die Geheimnisse um den Mythos aufdecken und ihre Ergebnisse in einer Dokumentation festhalten. In den Gesprächen mit den Dorfbewohnern bestätigen sich ihre Recherchen. Jeder weiß von der Hexe, und die sich immer wieder ereignenden Vorfälle in der Vergangenheit beunruhigen zumindest einen Teil der Bewohner: ermordet aufgefundene Kinder oder Jäger, die nie aus den Wäldern zurückkamen. Die vielen Kindergräber auf dem Friedhof verdunkeln das bereits düstere Bild des Dorfes. Ausgerüstet mit einer Karte, Verpflegung, Zelten und natürlich vor allem Kameras lassen die Drei bald die Zivilisation hinter sich, um den Ort des Geschehens unter die Lupe zu nehmen.
Die gut gelaunten Studenten dringen immer weiter in den Wald vor und filmen sich gegenseitig bei ihrer Entdeckungstour. Zunächst scheint alles ganz normal, doch schon bald kippt die Stimmung. Die Orientierung im Wald gestaltet sich schwierig und jede Nacht wird furchterregender: Unheimliche Geräusche von allen Seiten rauben den Studenten den Schlaf. Eines Morgens entdecken sie drei seltsame Steinhaufen, die in der Nacht rund ums Zelt deponiert worden sein müssen. Hinzu kommen befremdliche Gebilde aus Ästen, die an den Bäumen aufgehängt wurden. Während den zwei Jungs immer unheimlicher wird, hält Heather an ihrem Projekt fest und beharrt darauf, weiterhin alles zu filmen - nur eine von zahlreichen anderen Meinungsverschiedenheiten, die zusätzlich zur Angst, nie wieder aus dem Wald heraus zu finden, für Streit und Verzweiflung sorgen.
Als Michael die Karte aus Hoffnungslosigkeit einfach in den Fluss wirft, ist das Desaster perfekt. Wie werden sie jemals wieder aus den Wäldern finden? Auch die Idee, nachts kein Feuer anzumachen, schützt sie nicht vor den beängstigenden Geschehnissen: schreckliches Kindergeschrei von allen Seiten und etwas Unbekanntes, das sie im Zelt attackiert und in die Flucht schlägt. Doch sie können dem Unheil nicht entkommen. Immer wieder verlaufen sie sich und machen sich gegenseitig Vorwürfe. Nach einer weiteren Nacht ist Joshua unauffindbar. Schreie lassen vermuten, dass er irgendwo im Wald ist, und Heathers Entdeckung eines Bündels aus Zweigen mit blutigen Objekten vor dem Zelt lässt Schlimmes vermuten.
Als sie ein verlassenes Haus finden und es nach Joshua absuchen, liegen ihre Kameras bald nur noch regungslos auf dem Boden. Ein Jahr später wird ihr Filmmaterial gefunden, die einzige Hinterlassenschaft der drei Vermissten.
