Der Battle of the Year ist die Olympiade des Breakdance. Jedes Jahr findet ein Turnier statt, an dem die besten Tänzer der Welt teilnehmen. Der letzte Sieg des US-Teams liegt jedoch schon 15 Jahre zurück. Dante, ein Hip Hop Mogul aus Los Angeles, der früher selbst ein B-Boy war, will das Land, das diesen Sport einst erfunden hat, wieder zurück an die Spitze bringen. Er engagiert seinen guten Freund Blake, einen ehemaligen Basketball Coach, als Trainer. Gemeinsam glauben sie fest daran, dass der richtige Trainer aus jedem Team Champions machen kann und stellen ein Dream Team aus den besten B-Boys des Landes zusammen.

Blake bleiben nur drei Monate Zeit bis zum Battle of the Year, daher muss er sich jede Taktik, die er kennt, zu Nutze machen, um aus zwölf talentierten Individuen ein starkes Team zu formen. Denn nur dann kann es gelingen, die Trophäe wieder zurück nach Amerika zu holen - wo damals alles begann... Funky Beats, scheinbar schwerelose Körper und aussergewöhnliche Choreografien machen BATTLE OF THE YEAR zu einem Tanz-Event der Superlative. Unter der Regie von Benson Lee spielen "Lost"-Star Josh Holloway ("Mission: Impossible - Phantom Protokoll"), Laz Alonso ("Avatar - Aufbruch nach Pandora", "Fast & Furious - Neues Modell", "Stomp the Yard") und Chris Brown ("Denk wie ein Mann", "Takers", "Stomp the Yard").

"Battle Of The Year" ist ein in 3D produzierter Spielfilm aus dem Jahre 2013, in dem die Bedeutung der Tanz-Großveranstaltung "Battle of the Year" für die heutige weltweite Breakdance-Szene behandelt wird. Regisseur Benson Lee adaptiert seine eigene Breakdancing-Doku aus dem Jahr 2007, wofür Brin Hill ("Um Klassen besser") und Chris Parker ("Vampire in Brooklyn") das nach üblichen Sportfilm-Konventionen gestrickte Drehbuch beisteuern. Das "Dream Team" im Film wird überwiegend von echten B-Boys dargestellt. Eine Ausnahme bildet R&B-Sänger Chris Brown, der im Streifen die Rolle des anstößigen, egoistischen Rooster übernimmt. Als alkoholkranker und vom Schicksal gebeutelter Coach Jason "WB" Blake ist US-Schauspieler Josh Holloway zu sehen, der seinen internationalen Durchbruch 2004 als eine der Hauptrollen in der Erfolgsserie "Lost" feierte. 2011 war er an der Seite von Tom Cruise in "Mission: Impossible - Phantom Protokoll" zu sehen.
