Tyler Gage (Channing Tatum) lebt in ärmlichen Verhältnissen bei seinen Pflegeeltern und entwendet aus Langeweile Autos. Seine grosse Leidenschaft aber ist das Tanzen. Als er mit seinem besten Kumpel Mac (Damaine Radcliff) und dessen kleinem Bruder Skinny (De'Shawn Washington) eine Theaterkulisse der Maryland-Kunstakademie zerstört, wird er zu 200 Stunden gemeinnütziger Arbeit in der Akademie verurteilt. Widerwillig putzt er dort jeden Tag nach der Schule die Gänge und lernt die privilegierte Ballettstudentin Nora Clark (Jenna Dewan) kennen. Die beiden sind fasziniert voneinander. Als Noras Tanzpartner Andrew (Tim Lacatena) wegen einer Verletzung für die wichtige Abschlussaufführung ausfällt, springt der talentierte Tyler für das Training ein.

Er bereichert Noras klassisch-elegante Choreographie mit unkonventionellen Hip-Hop-Elementen. Die beiden verlieben sich ineinander. Nora trennt sich von ihrem egozentrischen Freund Brett (Josh Henderson), der nur seine eigene Musikkarriere im Kopf hat. Doch als ihr genesener Tanzpartner plötzlich im Training auftaucht, schmeisst Tyler alles hin, wie er es immer macht. Er kehrt in sein altes Leben und zu seinem besten Freund Mac zurück. Nach einem dramatischen Vorfall muss sich Tyler aber zwischen einer Zukunft im Getto und dem Risiko eines Neubeginns entscheiden.

"Step Up" bietet energiegeladene Tanzszenen und einen pulsierenden Soundtrack. Die Gegenüberstellung zweier Tanzstile und Lebensformen wird von den beiden Protagonisten überzeugend verkörpert. Das attraktive frühere Model Channing Tatum spielt den Aussenseiter Tyler Gage und beeindruckt mit coolen Street Dance Moves. Mit Auftritten in Grossproduktionen wie "Dear John", "Magic Mike" und "Side Effects" hat Tatum sich seitdem in Hollywood etabliert und produziert seit 2010 auch selber Filme. Jenna Dewan, welche die ambitionierte Nora spielt, ist eine Profitänzerin und ging schon mit Janet Jackson und Ricky Martin auf Tour. Die beiden Hauptdarsteller wurden auf dem Filmset ein Paar und sind seit 2009 verheiratet.

Starke Nebendarstellerleistungen zeigen der R&B-Sänger Mario als musikalisch begnadeter Student und Drew Sidora als Noras treue Freundin und ehrgeizige Sängerin. "Step Up" ist der erste Film der Regisseurin Anne Fletcher, die eine etablierte Choreographin in Hollywood ist. Danach führte sie bei "27 Dresses" mit Katherine Heigl und bei "The Proposal" mit Sandra Bullock Regie. Anne Fletcher zeichnet in "Step Up" auch verantwortlich für die Choreographie und holte weitere Tanzfilmexperten ins Boot. So schrieb der Drehbuchautor Duane Adler zuvor schon die Erfolgsgeschichte von "Save the Last Dance".

"Step Up" ist ein gelungener Genre-Mix aus Drama, Musik und Romanze, der von Star-Choreografin Anne Fletcher inszeniert wurde. Der Film erinnert des Öfteren an "Save the Last Dance" (2001), doch kein Wunder, schließlich zeichnet Duane Adler bei beiden Streifen für das Skript verantwortlich. In den Hauptrollen sind Channing Tatum und Jenna Dewan zu sehen. Anne Fletcher selbst hat im Film eine kleine Rolle. Als sich Tyler und Nora zum ersten Mal begegnen, ist sie als Tanzlehrerin zu sehen..
