Komödie
Noch ist sich Kunstdieb Crunch Calhoun (Kurt Russell) unklar darüber, ob er seinem jüngeren Bruder Nicky (Matt Dillon) verzeihen soll. Nicky hatte Crunch an die Polizei verraten, was letzterem eine siebenjährige Gefängnisstrafe einbrachte. Nach Crunchs Entlassung kriselt es deshalb erstmal zwischen den Brüdern. Aber die Aussicht auf einen neuen Coup mit lukrativer Beute sorgt für eine zumindest oberflächliche Aussöhnung. Allerdings benötigen sie für das Gelingen die perfekte Kopie eines kostbaren alten Buches. Diese Kopie müsste gegen das Original, das sich in einem Lagerhaus in Kanada befindet, ausgetauscht werden.
Crunch und Nicky gründen eine Bande, mit dem etwas unbeholfenen Neuling Francie, dem französischen Meisterfälscher Guy de Cornet sowie dem Althehler und Frauenhelden Paddy. Der Diebstahl des Buches gelingt, doch dann bringt eine Idee von Nicky alle in große Schwierigkeiten. "The Art of the Steal - Der Kunstraub" ist auf den ersten Blick ein klassisches Heist-Movie um eine Räuberbande, die einen spektakulären Coup plant. Der Krimi des kanadischen Regisseurs Jonathan Sobol unterscheidet sich jedoch von ähnlichen Filmen durch seine wendungsreiche Handlung sowie dem stets präsenten humoristischen Unterton, hervorgerufen vor allem von den liebenswert-absonderlichen Protagonisten. Kurt Russel spielt den in die Jahre gekommen Meisterdieb und Motorrad-Stuntman Crunch, sein zwielichtiger Bruder Nicky wird von Matt Dillon dargestellt.
