China im 19. Jahrhundert: Im Kampf um einen Goldschatz verfeinden sich die Mitglieder eines mächtigen Clans. Ein Schmied und ein mysteriöser Engländer geraten zwischen die Fronten. Und auch eine Bordellbesitzerin scheint es auf das Gold abgesehen zu haben. Es entwickelt sich ein gnadenloser Kampf, bei dem Rache ebenfalls eine große Rolle spielt. Das Martial-Arts-Epos bietet spektakuläre Action mit virtuosen Kampfchoreografien.
China im 19. Jahrhundert: Der berüchtigte Lion-Clan hat den Auftrag, eine große Ladung Gold zum kaiserlichen Palast zu geleiten. Doch der Anführer wird von seinem Stellvertreter hintergangen und ermordet. Zen Yi (Rick Yune) alias X-Blade, will seinen Vater rächen und begibt sich nach Jungle Village, wo er die Verräter auch ausfindig macht. Dadurch gerät der kunstfertige Schmied des Dorfes (RZA) in den Fokus der Rivalen, da sie auf seine Waffen angewiesen sind. Nachdem er Zen Yi unterstützt hat, werden ihm jedoch von den Lions beide Hände abgehackt.
Nur durch die Hilfe von Jack Knife (Russell Crowe) überlebt er die schweren Verletzungen. Mit der Unterstützung des geheimnisvollen Engländers gelingt es dem Schmied sogar, künstliche Hände aus Metall anzufertigen. Natürlich sinnt er auf Rache, und es ist nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis es zum blutigen Showdown kommen wird. Und da das gestohlene Gold unter ihrem Bordell versteckt wurde, haben auch Madame Blossom (Lucy Liu) und ihre Mädchen dabei ein Wörtchen mitzureden. Regisseur, Autor und Hauptdarsteller RZA präsentiert eine Hommage an den klassischen Kung-Fu-Film, in der er Elemente verschiedenster Genres zu einem furiosen Stilmix verbindet. Dabei konnte das als Robert Diggs in New York geborene Multitalent auf sehr unterschiedliche, namhafte Mitstreiter zurückgreifen.
Neben den international bekannten Schauspielern Russell Crowe, Lucy Liu und Rick Yune standen auch Hongkong-Star Daniel Wu, der vietnamesische Kampfsportler Cung Le sowie die Wrestling-Legende David Bautista vor der Kamera. Für die comicartig inszenierten Gewaltszenen dürfte vor allem Horrorspezialist Eli Roth ("Cabin Fever", "Hostel") verantwortlich gewesen sein, der am Drehbuch beteiligt war. Sein enger Freund Quentin Tarantino war übrigens nicht an der Produktion von "The Man with the Iron Fists" beteiligt, auch wenn man den Eindruck gewinnen könnte, der Name des Kultregisseurs wurde lediglich aus Marketinggründen im Zusammenhang mit dem fertigen Film genannt. Als Mitglied der legendären Rapper vom Wu-Tang Clan war RZA natürlich höchstpersönlich für den Soundtrack verantwortlich.
