"True Romance" ist so etwas wie die perfekte Symbiose der Talente von Drehbuchschreiber und Regisseur. Tony Scott ("Top Gun", "The Last Boy Scout") versah das Drehbuch von Quentin Tarantino mit mächtigem visuellen Tempo und sehr hübsch choreographierten Gewalteinlagen (den großen Shoot-out am Ende muß man gesehen haben, um es zu glauben). Herausgekommen ist dabei so etwas wie die Hochglanz-polierte Comic-Version von "Pulp Fiction": ein Film mit einem hoffnungslos romantischen Märchen als Grundgeschichte, überlagert mit einem hemmungslos gewalttätigen Crime-Plot. Berufs-Bösewicht Gary Oldman tritt als Alabama's Zuhälter Drexl auf. Dennis Hopper erklärt Christopher Walken in der vielleicht besten Szene, die Tarantino je geschrieben hat, die wahre Herkunft der Sizilianer. Samuel L. Jackson, James Gandolfini oder Tom Sizemore haben ähnlich feine Kurzauftritte. Tony Scott leistet sich den Luxus, jemanden wie Val Kilmer in eine Rolle zu packen, in der er unmöglich zu erkennen ist. Und der damals noch sehr unverbrauchte Brad Pitt erfreut den Zuschauer als der Inbegriff des ewig bekifften Mitbewohners. (Filmszene)...
