Krankenschwester Ana wird unsanft aus dem Schlaf gerissen, als ihr Ehemann von der Nachbarin gebissen wird und zum Untoten mutiert. Ana flüchtet durch die Stadt, in der nur Chaos herrscht. Überall sind Zombies unterwegs, die Jagd auf Lebende machen. Ana kann sich mit einer kleinen Gruppe unverletzter Menschen in ein Einkaufszentrum retten. Doch dann wird es auch dort zu gefährlich, und sie versuchen, mit zwei Shuttlebussen zu entkommen. Eben noch hatte Ana (Sarah Polley) ein friedliches Zuhause, doch dann wird sie von grässlichen Schreien aus dem Schlaf gerissen.
Die Nachbarstochter hat ihrem Mann den Hals zerfetzt, und dieser steht zu ihrem Schrecken wieder auf und stürzt sich auf sie. In Panik flüchtet sie, rast mit dem Auto durch die Stadt. Überall begegnet sie Zombies, die sich über die Einwohner hermachen, die nach einem Biss von ihnen selbst zu Untoten werden. Ein Virus hat überall die Menschen dahingerafft, aber sie sterben nicht, sondern werden allesamt zu Zombies, die nichts anderes im Sinn haben, als die Menschen, die ihnen begegnen, zu ihresgleichen zu machen. Lediglich durch einen Schuss ins Gehirn sind sie aufzuhalten. Ana stößt auf Gleichgesinnte, den Polizisten Kenneth (Ving Rhames), Michael (Jake Weber), Andre (Mekhi Phifer) und seine Freundin Luda (Inna Korobkina), die auch auf der Flucht sind.
Gemeinsam verschanzen sie sich in einem Einkaufszentrum in der Nähe. Doch die aggressiven Wachmänner haben Angst vor Ansteckung und halten die Neuankömmlinge gefangen. Nur Wachmann Terry (Kevin Zegers) gefällt das nicht, und er befreit Ana und ihre Gruppe. Sie nehmen sogar noch weitere Überlebende auf, von denen allerdings zwei getötet werden müssen, da sie zu Zombies mutieren. Nach einer kleinen Atempause, in der alle ganz glücklich sind über die reichlichen Essensvorräte im Einkaufszentrum, entschließt sich die Gruppe, mit zwei gepanzerten Shuttlebussen die Jacht von Neuzugang Steve (Ty Burrell) zu erreichen. Zuvor schicken sie einen Hund mit Essen und Funkgerät zu dem Überlebenden Andy (Bruce Bohne) auf das Dach des gegenüberliegenden Hauses.
Nur ist leider ein Zombie klug genug, den Hund zu verfolgen, und Andy ist verloren. Jetzt hält die kleine Gruppe nichts mehr. Durch ganze Horden mordlustiger Zombies bahnen sie sich mit den Bussen ihren Weg zum Hafen. Haben sie eine Chance, mit der Jacht zu entkommen? Regisseur Zack Snyder ("300", 2006; "Justice League", 2017) schuf mit "Dawn of the Dead" ein Remake von George A. Romeros gleichnamigem Film aus dem Jahr 1978, der in Deutschland unter dem Titel "Zombie" lief. Snyders Crew an Bord dieses Highspeed-Action-Horror-Hochglanz-Thrillers ist gut gewählt: Ving Rhames ("Pulp Fiction"), Mekhi Phifer ("8 Mile"), Sarah Polley ("Beowulf & Grendel", 2005; Regie von "An ihrer Seite", 2006) und Jake Weber "Learning to Drive - Fahrstunden fürs Leben", 2014). "Remake von George A. Romeros Horrorfilm "Zombie" (...), das eine allumfassende Krisenerfahrung im Rahmen des Horrorgenres visualisiert und atmosphärisch durchaus dicht eine Endzeitstimmung heraufbeschwört." 25 Jahre, nachdem George A. Romeros apokalyptischer Horrorklassiker "Dawn of the Dead" Millionen von Kinozuschauer auf der ganzen Welt in Angst und Schrecken versetzte, verfilmte der ehemalige Werbefilmer Zack Snyder den Schocker 2004 noch einmal. "Dawn of the Dead" ist aber viel mehr als nur ein bloßes Remake: Es ist eine originelle und visionäre Weiterführung des Zombie-Kultfilms. Für Snyder bedeutete der Film den kommerziellen Durchbruch. In den kommenden Jahren drehte der Visionär Filmhits wie "300", "Watchmen", "Die Legende der Wächter" und zuletzt "Sucker Punch". Sein neues Projekt ist eine zeitgemäße Verfilmung des Comic-Klassikers "Superman". Die Rolle der Krankenschwester Ana Clark übernahm Sarah Polley, die sich bisher vor allem in Independent-Movies einen Namen gemacht hat. Sie fungiert im Film als eine Art moralischer Kompass der Gruppe. "Das hatte wohl niemand von mir erwartet", erinnert sich Polley, "aber mir hat die Rolle und der Film sofort zugesagt. Außerdem liebe ich das Original. Mir war schnell klar, dass man das ganze surreale Szenario total ernst nehmen musste, um den beabsichtigten dramatischen Effekt zu erreichen. Das war natürlich eine große Herausforderung." Der tatkräftige Polizist Kenneth wird von Ving Rhames verkörpert. Als Marsellus Wallace in Quentin Tarantinos Kult-Film "Pulp Fiction" ging Rhames in die Popkultur-Geschichte ein.
