Kurz vor ihrem Schulabschluss will sich eine Clique auf dem örtlichen Jahrmarkt noch einmal so richtig amüsieren. Die eher gehemmte Wendy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) hat gern alles unter Kontrolle und geht nur widerstrebend mit auf die Achterbahn. Obwohl die Chancen 1 zu 250 Millionen stehen, dass bei dieser Fahrt etwas passiert, geschieht das Unglaubliche: Der Wagenzug des "Devil's Flight", in dem sich auch Wendys Klassenkollegen dem Tempo- und Looping-Rausch hingeben, entgleist wegen einer Verkettung mehrerer unglücklicher Zufälle. Dies geschieht genauso, wie es Wendy in einer Schreckensvision bereits vorausgesehen hat. Deshalb ist sie in Panik in letzter Sekunde geflüchtet. Weil es danach im noch stehenden Achterbahnzug zu einem Tumult gekommen ist und einige Passagiere ebenfalls wieder ausgestiegen sind, überleben neben Wendy und Kevin (Ryan Merriman) auch der Topathlet Lewis (Texas Battle), zwei junge Frauen (Chelan Simmons, Crystal Lowe) sowie das Pärchen Erin (Alexz Johnson) und Ian (Kris Lemche) das tödliche Unglück.

Doch sie sind nur vorübergehend dem Tod entkommen. Schon bald häufen sich eigenartige Unfälle, bei denen all jene sterben, die eigentlich auch in der Achterbahn sitzen wollten. Wendy und Kevin, die mittlerweile auf den Fall der Schulklasse aufmerksam geworden sind, die vor Jahren auf dem Flug nach Paris abgestürzt war ("Final Destination"), versuchen herauszufinden, nach welchem Muster sich der Tod die übrigen Überlebenden holt - und wie er ausgetrickst werden kann.

Dritter Teil der "Final Destination"-Reihe, in der der rachsüchtige Tod wieder all jene heimsucht, die ihm unerwartet von der Schippe gesprungen sind. Ihr Schicksal ereilt die Unglücklichen auch diesmal in Form besonders phantasievoller Todesarten, bei denen mit schwarzem Humor nicht gespart wird. Das Drehbuch- / Regie-Team James Wong und Glen Morgan zeichnete schon bei der Kultserie "Akte X" für einige der herausragendsten Episoden verantwortlich. Mit gerade mal 24 Jahren hat sich die Amerikanerin Mary Elizabeth Winstead bereits einen Ruf als "Scream-Queen" vom Schlage einer Jamie Lee Curtis erarbeitet: Schließlich war Winstead in zahlreichen Horrorfilmen wie "Final Destination", "The Ring 2" und "Black Christmas" mit von der Partie und durfte angesichts grausiger Ereignisse und blutrünstiger Serienkiller des öfteren aus Leibeskräften losschreien. Daneben profilierte sie sich aber auch in Rollen abseits des Horrorgenres: Großen Erfolg bescherte ihr die Disney-Komödie "Sky High - Diese Schule hebt ab!" (2005), in der sie als böse Royal Pain eine Superhelden-Schule unsicher machte. Daneben sah man Winstead u.a. als Bruce Willis' Filmtochter im vierten Teil von "Stirb langsam", im Historiendrama "Bobby" über das Leben und Wirken von Robert F. Kennedy sowie in Quentin Tarantinos "Death Proof", in dem sie eine naive Schauspielerin verkörperte. 2010 wird sie in der Comicverfilmung "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" an der Seite von Michael Cera ("Juno") die große Liebe des Titelcharakters Scott spielen. Ryan Merriman spielt den Überlebenden Scott, der zusammen mit Wendy den Tod zu überlisten versucht. Merriman, der am 10. April 1983 in Oklahoma geboren wurde, wirkte schon als Kind in Werbespots und Theateraufführungen mit. Später war der Nachwuchsdarsteller u.a. im Krimidrama "Lansky" als jüngere Version des Hauptcharakters zu sehen und wirkte in mehreren Disney-Fernsehproduktionen mit. 1999 folgte dann Ryan Merrimans erste Kinorolle: In "Tief wie der Ozean" verkörperte er an der Seite von Michelle Pfeiffer einen entführten Jungen, der nach neun Jahren von seinen Eltern wiedergefunden wird. Seither spielte er u.a. in mehreren Horrorfilmen wie "Halloween: Resurrection", "The Ring 2" und "Final Destination 3" mit.
