Die letzten Menschen haben sich in Städte zurückgezogen, die von der Außenwelt mit Mauern getrennt sind. Innen herrschen einige wenige Reiche in ihren Hochhäusern, draußen die Zombies, die sich zu immer größeren Armeen zusammen rotten. Eine Söldnertruppe wird angeheuert, die die Lebenden vor den lebenden Toten schützen soll. Was übrig ist von der Menschheit, hat sich hinter den verstärkten Mauern und Wällen einer Stadt verbarrikadiert, während Zombies in der Einöde vor den Mauern wüten. Die wenigen Reichen und Mächtigen der lebenden Restgesellschaft versuchen, sich die Illusion eines normalen Lebens zu bewahren. Sie thronen in den exklusiven Fiddler's Green-Türmen, der letzten Bastion der Oberschicht.
Auf den Straßen darunter führen die übrigen Bewohner ein lange nicht so sorgloses Leben zwischen Spielen, Fleischhandel und Drogen. Sowohl die luftigen Höhen von Fiddler's Green wie auch die traurigen Niederungen der Stadt werden von einer Hand voll skrupelloser Opportunisten in Schach gehalten, die von Kaufman angeführt werden, der seine Hände in allen Geschäften der Stadt hat: vom legalen Immobilienhandel bis zu den weniger korrekten Machenschaften einer Welt am Abgrund. Um Essen und andere wichtige Güter für die Stadtbewohner zu beschaffen und den Wohlhabenden den gewöhnten Luxus zu besorgen, geht eine Gruppe von hart gesottenen Söldnern immer wieder auf Bergungsmissionen außerhalb der Stadt. Angeführt von Riley und seiner rechten Hand Cholo, beschützt von ihrem gepanzerten Gefährt Dead Reckoning. Rileys Traum ist eine Flucht in den Norden, wo eine freie Welt ohne Zäune existieren soll, und Cholo will in luxuriösen Höhen von Fiddlers Green leben, weit weg von der Gewalt, mit der er aufgewachsen ist. Derweil verändert sich das Leben sowohl vor als auch hinter den Mauern der Stadt.
Unruhen und Anarchie machen sich breit bei den Unterprivilegierten, während außerhalb der Stadt eine Evolution unter den Untoten beginnt. Sie beginnen zu lernen, sie organisieren sich und sie beginnen, miteinander zu kommunizieren. Als Cholo mit Dead Reckoning versucht, Millionen von Kaufman zu erpressen, werden Riley und seine bunte Truppe - darunter Slack und Charlie - losgeschickt, um Cholo zu stoppen und gleichzeitig die Stadt vor der näher rückenden Zombiearmee zu schützen.

George Romero, Regisseur der Genre-Klassiker "Night Of The Living Dead", "Dawn Of The Dead" und "Day Of The Dead", schuf mit "Land Of The Dead" den krönenden Abschluß seiner Zombie-Filmreihe. Simon Pegg und Edgar Wright, die Macher der Zombie-Komödie "Shaun Of The Dead", haben übrigens Cameo-Auftritte als Zombies. Hauptdarsteller Simon Baker trat als Schauspieler erstmals 1992 in Erscheinung. Nach einer Reihe von TV-Auftritten in verschiedenen Fernsehserien konnte er einen renommierten australischen Fernsehpreis als "Beliebtester Jungschauspieler" (Most Popular New Talent) für seinen Auftritt in der Seifenoper "E Street" entgegennehmen. 1997 erhielt er eine Rolle in dem Spielfilm "L.A. Confidential", nachdem er mit seiner Frau und seiner Tochter nach Los Angeles übergesiedelt war. Die Rolle im Film-Noir-Drama des Regisseurs Curtis Hanson machte ihn einem größeren Publikum bekannt. Von 2008 bis 2015 feierte Baker mit der Hauptrolle in der TV-Serie "The Mentalist" große Erfolge.
