Als 1985 ein Raumschiff über Johannesburg auftaucht, weckt es nicht Terrorangst, sondern Mitleid. Die Schar der Ausserirdischen, die sich im gestrandeten Vehikel befindet, ist hilflos und am Ende ihrer Kräfte. Die Regierung errichtet kurzerhand ein Auffanglager, District 9.
Im Laufe der Jahre erschöpft sich die Geduld der Bevölkerung. Die wegen ihres Aussehens Shrimps genannten Aliens gelten als Schmarotzer und fallen den Bewohnern von Johannesburg zur Last. Das private Unternehmen MNU erhält den Auftrag, die unwillkommenen Besucher aus ihrem Getto in ein Lager weit weg von Johannesburg zu verfrachten - sämtliche 1,8 Millionen von ihnen.
Der Beamte Wikus Van de Merwe , Schwiegersöhnchen des MNU-Chefs, überwacht die Umsiedlung. Begleitet von einem Kamerateam geht er an vorderster Front in der Sperrzone von Wellblechhütte zu Wellblechhütte und lässt sich von den Aliens Einverständniserklärungen unterzeichnen.
Von Beginn weg kommt es mit den nicht eben kooperativen Slumbewohnern zu Zwischenfällen. Wikus verletzt sich denkbar unglücklich und bemerkt an sich eine spektakuläre Verwandlung: Seine verletzte Hand mutiert zur Alienklaue. Dies macht ihn zum begehrten Forschungsobjekt für seinen multinationalen Arbeitgeber, der ganz eigene, niedere Ziele verfolgt.
Wikus türmt aus dem Labor, wo er seziert werden soll, und sucht nun seinerseits Schutz im Getto. Vom Jäger zum Gejagten geworden findet Wikus ausgerechnet in einem Ausserirdischen einen Waffenbruder im Kampf ums Überleben.
Aus Südafrika kam 2009 die Sci-Fi-Perle des Kinojahres. Regisseur Neill Blomkamp gelang mit seinem Spielfilmdebüt nicht nur spektakuläre, packende Unterhaltung, sondern ein bitterböser später Kommentar zum Apartheid-Regime Südafrikas ebenso wie zu Problemen in der Asylpolitik dieser Tage. Formal ist «District 9» als «Mockumentary» gestaltet. Wie nebensächlich schmuggelt der Regisseur und Trickexperte Blomkamp eine Fülle von Spezialeffekten in seine pseudodokumentarischen Bilder, die das Auge weit geschickter täuschen als das um Aufmerksamkeit buhlende Blendwerk in Filmen wie der «Transformers»-Reihe.
Sein Kinodebüt gibt auch Hauptdarsteller Sharlto Copley, dessen Wikus Van de Merwe eine erstaunliche Wandlung von der Büromaus zur Einmannarmee durchläuft. Copley hat danach als Murdock im Blockbuster «The A-Team» definitiv Hollywood erreicht.
Auch im aktuellen Sci-Fi-Film von Neill Blomkamp, der am 5. März in den Kinos der Deutschschweiz angelaufen ist, tritt Sharlto Copley in Erscheinung. Da er mittels «motion capturing» für die Bewegungen des titelgebenden Roboters «Chappie» besorgt war, dürfte der Südafrikaner diesmal wohl unerkannt bleiben.

Mit "District 9" gelingt dem südafrikanischen Regisseur Neill Blomkamp ("Elysium") in Zusammenarbeit mit Produzent Peter Jackson ("Herr der Ringe") trotz einem nicht gerade opulenten Budget von nur 30 Millionen Dollar ein wegweisender Erstling, der mit genialen Effekten und einem ganz eigenen Stil das Sci-Fi-Genre ordentlich durchschüttelte. In seinem Gegenwartsszenario, das in Südafrika angesiedelt und gedreht wurde, sehen sich Menschen und Aliens zu einer Koexistenz gezwungen, die immer unfriedlicher wird. "In Form eines "Mockumentarys" skizziert das grimmige Science-Fiction-Drama eine degenerierte Gesellschaft und verbindet seine dystopische Botschaft auf fesselnde Weise mit einem eindrücklichen, auf Realismus abzielenden "Look"".
