Ein namenloser US-Gauner (Mel Gibson) strandet nach einer wilden Flucht mit zwei Millionen Dollar in einem mexikanischen Höllenknast. Zwischen korrupten Cops, Kartellstrukturen und Gefängniswillkür versucht er zu überleben - und schützt einen Jungen, dessen Organe der machthungrige Gefängnisherrscher Javi begehrt. Ein rauer, schwarzhumoriger Actionthriller mit Western-Einschlag. In "Get the Gringo" landet ein namenloser US-Ganove nach einer Verfolgungsjagd und einem Crash an der mexikanischen Grenze im berüchtigten El-Pueblito-Gefängnis. Die korrupten Polizisten Vasquez und Romero stecken die zwei Millionen Dollar aus seinem Wagen ein und lassen ihn unter falschen Anschuldigungen einliefern. In der gnadenlosen Gefängnisstadt, die von dem kranken, aber mächtigen Javi kontrolliert wird, schlägt sich der "Gringo" mit List, Diebstählen und trockenem Humor durch.

Als er einen Jungen kennenlernt, der mit seiner Mutter im Gefängnis lebt und von Javis Leuten auffällig beschützt wird, entdeckt er ein düsteres Geheimnis: Der Junge ist der einzige passende Organspender für Javi, dessen kranke Leber ihn langsam umbringt - und bereits der Vater des Kindes ist diesem Wahnsinn zum Opfer gefallen. Der Gringo beschließt, den Jungen zu schützen, Javis Machtbasis zu untergraben und nebenbei die veruntreuten Millionen zurückzubekommen. Während ein US-Botschaftsmitarbeiter seine kriminelle Vergangenheit aufdeckt und der amerikanische Gangsterboss Frank wegen des verschwundenen Geldes Killer nach Mexiko schickt, geraten alle Fronten in El Pueblito in Bewegung. Zwischen Kartellgewalt, Gefängnisintrigen und politischem Druck muss der Gringo entscheiden, wie weit er für den Jungen und dessen Mutter zu gehen bereit ist - und welche Seite er im finalen Machtkampf wirklich spielt. "Get the Gringo" (2012) markiert Mel Gibsons Rückkehr zum rauen Actionkino. Unter der Regie von Adrian Grünberg mischt der Film Gefängnisdrama, Neo-Western und Noir-Thriller.

Das an reale lateinamerikanische "Gefängnisstädte" angelehnte Setting zeigt ein System aus Korruption, Kartellen und staatlicher Willkür. Gibsons namenloser "Gringo" fungiert als zynischer Erzähler und Antiheld, der hartes Genre mit schwarzem Humor verbindet. Die Beziehung zu einem Jungen und dessen Mutter verschiebt den Film vom reinen Actionvehikel zu einer Geschichte über Verantwortung in einer moralisch verrotteten Welt.

Mel Gibson schafft sein Comeback als Anti-Held! Brutal, schrankenlos und verdammt kurzweilig kommt der Aktion-Reißer "Get the Gringo" mit dem Oscar-prämierten und einstigen Hollywood-Schwarm Gibson ('Was Frauen wollen') in der Hauptrolle daher: Als US-Gangster landet Driver (Mel Gibson) in einem mexikanischen Gefängnis. Seine einzige Chance zu überleben ist ein gewitzter Zehnjähriger, dessen Leber dem Knast-Paten Javi (Daniel Giménez Cacho) transplantiert werden soll. Dargestellt wird der Todgeweihte von Jung-Schauspieler Kevin Hernandez ('Bad Sitter'). Auch als Regisseur drückte Gibson dem Aktion-Knaller seinen ganz eigenen Stempel auf. Unterstützung bekam er in Sachen Regiearbeit von seinem guten Bekannten Adrian Grunberg, der schon gemeinsam mit Gibson den vielfach ausgezeichneten Aktion-Kracher "Apocalypto" produzierte. Und auch Drehbuchautor Stacy Peskie wirkte ebenfalls schon an "Apocalypto" mit - die Erfahrung in Sachen Zusammenarbeit ist dem neuesten Projekt des Trios anzusehen. Mit dem französischen Kamera-Genie Benoît Debie ('Spring Breakers') an der Seite, der der Gefängnisstadt eine glaubhafte Räumlichkeit verleiht, schaffen die Macher in Gemeinschaftsarbeit einen Action-Kracher im Stil der 90er Jahre. Mit einem 20 Millionen US Dollar Budget, finanziert aus Gibsons eigener Tasche, kommt der Crime-Reißer ganz ohne große CGI-Effekte aus: Ein Muss für alle Fans der puren Action. Gibson, der sich in Hollywood aufgrund privater Eskapaden ins Aus schoss, beweist mit "Get the Gringo" eindrucksvoll, dass er immer noch nicht zum alten Eisen gehört.
