Der liebenswert naive Loser Shaun, frisch verlassen von seiner Freundin Liz, ständig begleitet von Kumpel Ed, versucht seine Ex-Freundin vor einer Londoner Zombie-Epidemie zu retten. Gemeinsam mit seiner Mutter, dem bald zum Zombie mutierenden Stiefvater und einigen Freunden verschanzt sich Shaun in seiner Stamm-Kneipe "Winchester" und hofft, dort dem Horror zu entgehen. Grusel-Zombie-Splatter-Film mit Kultstatus und feinstem englischen Humor. Derzeit gefällt dem Elektrowarenverkäufer Shaun (Simon Pegg) sein Leben so gar nicht. Seine Freundin Liz (Kate Ashfield) hat ihm den Laufpass gegeben, und sein heiß geliebter Freud Ed (Nick Frost) ist auch keine Inspiration - beide hängen immerzu vor Videospielen ab. Da wird London erst ganz allmählich, dann recht schwungvoll, von einer Zombie-Epidemie heimgesucht.
Auch Shaun bemerkt davon erst einmal gar nichts und geht seelenruhig durch seine Straße voller Untoter und kauft im Lebensmittelgeschäft mit blutverschmierten Kühlfachtüren ein. Doch als die Zombies durch seinen Garten torkeln, sich auch durch gezielte Schallplatten-Wurfgeschosse nicht vertreiben lassen und sogar der Mitbewohner Pete (Peter Serafinowicz) gebissen und selbst zum Untoten wird, da ist doch allmählich die Flucht nach vorne angesagt. Shaun und Ed überreden Liz, ohne die Shaun niemals flüchten würde, und deren Freunde, in ihrer Stammkneipe "Winchester" Unterschlupf zu suchen. Da Shaun plötzlich Familiensinn entwickelt, werden auch seine Mutter Barbara (Penelope Wilton) und ihr Lebenspartner Philip (Bill Nighy) mitgenommen. Die Flucht gestaltet sich mehr als schwierig, denn das "Winchester" ist von Zombies belagert, und mittlerweile ist Philip auch schon ein halber Untoter, doch die Mutter will sich partout nicht von ihm trennen. Schließlich übt die kleine Gruppe "Zombies imitieren". Mit verdrehten Augen und hängenden Armen humpeln sie unbehelligt in die Kneipe und verbarrikadieren sich dort. Doch auch hier sind sie nicht sicher, und ihr kleiner Stoßtrupp verkleinert sich zusehends. Doch Shaun wächst über sich selbst hinaus, denn er tut es für die Liebe. "Schräger Film, inszeniert mit offensichtlicher Lust am Zombie-Genre, ohne sich im Spiel mit Zitaten zu verlieren. Ohne übermäßigen Einsatz von Kunstblut entwickelt er durchaus eine gewisse Ernsthaftigkeit." Lexikon des internationalen Films Allein schon die Tagline des Films: "Eine romantische Komödie. Mit Zombies" bringt auf den Punkt, worum es in diesem Streifen geht.
Shaun wächst über sich hinaus und besiegt die Zombies für seine große Liebe Liz. Dies geschieht auf eine herrlich abgedrehte Art und Weise, mit rabenschwarzem Humor, gut platzierten Filmzitaten - vor allem aus Filmen von George A. Romero - unbedingt klischeehaft, verrückten Kampfszenen und bitterbösen Seitenhieben auf die Gesellschaft und die gesamte Horror-Zombie-Industrie. Simon Pegg und Nick Frost übertreffen einander an ungewollt-komischen Gags und dem widerwilligem Aufgeben ihrer Komfortzone vor dem Fernsehapparat. Beinahe muss man den klischeehaften Satz: "Ein Muss für Horrorfans!" bemühen. "Shaun of the Dead" ist der erste Beitrag der "Blood-and-Ice-Cream-Trilogie" der Autoren Simon Pegg und Edgar Wright (der auch Regie führt). Hier fließt viel Blut, und jedes Mal wird zumindest ein Cornetto-Eis im Film verspeist, so auch im Folgefilm "Hot Fuzz - Zwei abgewichste Profis".

(film-dienst) Simon Pegg und Edgar Wright, ihres Zeichens die Masterminds hinter der englischen Comedy-Serie "Spaced", erweisen in "Shaun Of The Dead" dem Zombie-Genre ihre Reverenz: Von George Romeros Genre-Urvater "Night Of The Living Dead" bis zum Highspeed-Zombieschocker "28 Days Later" reichen die Vorbilder. Dabei entwickelt die "romantische Zombiekomödie" eine durchaus eigenständige Geschichte mit sympathischen Charakteren, persifliert den tristen McJob-Alltag im Britischen Königreich und spart auch nicht mit gruseligen Zombieattacken, durch die die Schar der Darsteller nach und nach dezimiert wird. Co-Autor und Hauptdarsteller Simon Pegg ist ein wahrer Tausendsassa: Arbeitete er doch seit Anfang der 90er-Jahre u.a. als Standup-Comedian, Drehbuchschreiber, Schauspieler, Produzent und Regisseur. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken zählen die Comedy-Serie "Spaced", für die er u.a. mit dem renommierten BAFTA-Award ausgezeichnet wurde, sowie die in Zusammenarbeit mit Edgar Wright entwickelte "Cornetto-Trilogie" mit den Kinoerfolgen "Shaun Of The Dead", "Hot Fuzz" und "The Worlds End". In den neuen "Star Trek"-Kinofilmen übernahm Pegg die Rolle des Chefmechanikers Montgomery "Scotty" Scott. Selbst zum Comic-Charakter hat es Simon Pegg bereits gebracht, wenn auch nicht ganz freiwillig: Peggs Aussehen wurde von Zeichner Darick Robertson als Vorlage für den Charakter Wee Hughie im satirischen Superhelden-Comic "The Boys" verwendet. Pegg ist mittlerweile selbst ein Fan der Serie und hat sogar das Vorwort zum ersten "The Boys"-Sammelband verfasst. Shauns Stiefvater wird vom britischen Charakterdarsteller Bill Nighy gespielt. Nighy, der am 12. Dezember 1949 im südenglischen Caterham geboren wurde, begann seine Karriere am Theater. Mit einer Nebenrolle im Thriller "Die Nadel" gelang ihm 1981 auch der Sprung auf die große Leinwand. Während er sich in den folgenden Jahren in Großbritannien neben seinen Theaterengagements als gern gebuchter Fernseh- und Kinodarsteller etablierte, blieb er außerhalb seiner Heimat lange Zeit so gut wie unbekannt. Seinen internationalen Durchbruch erlebte Nighy erst 2003 mit der Romantik-Komödie "Tatsächlich... Liebe", in der er als zynischer Alt-Rockstar Billy Mack brillierte. Seither ist Nighy auch in Hollywood äußerst gefragt - unter anderem spielte er den monströsen Piratenkapitän Davy Jones in "Fluch der Karibik" 2 und 3, General Olbricht im Stauffenberg-Drama "Operation Walküre" (2008) sowie den Vampirfürsten Viktor in den Horrorfilmen "Underworld" und "Underworld - Aufstand der Lykaner". Bill Nighy lebt in der Grafschaft Suffolk an der englischen Ostküste.
