Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wird die junge Amerikanerin Isabel Archer nach dem Tod ihrer Eltern nach Europa geschickt. Dort soll sie ihre Verwandtschaft besuchen. Sie sucht aber auch das Abenteuer, will ihre Freiheit genießen und sich selber finden. Diese Einstellung ist ihr Umfeld, im England des späten 19. Jahrhunderts, nicht gewohnt, da zu dieser Zeit Anstand und Manieren Vorrang haben.
Doch Isabel will sich gegen die Verhältnisse der damaligen Zeit und die geringen Entfaltungsmöglichkeiten der Frauen auflehnen: Sie weist Annäherungsversuche und Heiratsanträge taktvoll zurück. Weder Caspar Goodwood, ein Industrieller und ebenfalls Amerikaner, der ihr nach England nachgereist ist, noch der wohlhabende Lord Warburton, sind in ihrem Buhlen erfolgreich. In England wird ihr Cousin, Ralph Touchett, zu einer Art Seelenverwandter für sie. Er leidet an einer unheilbaren Krankheit und liebt Isabel heimlich, was er ihr jedoch erst sehr spät offenbart. Ihm gelingt es, sich so mit seinem Vater zu arrangieren, dass er sein großes Erbe Isabel überlässt. Dadurch kommt die junge Amerikanerin zu einem beachtlichen Vermögen, nachdem Ralphs Vater seiner Tuberkulose erliegt.
Es erlaubt Isabel, ein unabhängiges Leben zu führen, wenngleich es viele Neider anzieht. Als reiche Erbin bereist Isabel Europa und lernt dabei Serena Merle kennen, eine erschöpfte Feingeistin und Kupplerin, die sie in die Arme von Gilbert Osmond drängt, den sie schließlich heiratet. Er ist ein verwitweter, verarmter amerikanischer Kunstsammler und zieht nach der Hochzeit mit seiner Frau nach Rom. Doch schon bald fühlt sich Isabel nicht mehr richtig von ihm geliebt und auch seine Faulheit stört sie. Sie vermutet hinter der Hochzeit eine Intrige, bei der es darum geht, an ihr Geld zu kommen ...
