Arizona, im Jahre 1882. Albert Stark ist ein «Schlappschwanz». Zu diesem Schluss ist jedenfalls seine Freundin Louise gekommen, nachdem der schmächtige Schäfter sich wieder einmal vor einem Duell gedrückt hat.
Louise zieht es deshalb zu seinem mit einem prächtigen Schnauz bestückten Nebenbuhler.
Albert lässt den Kopf - natürlich - hängen, erhält dann aber die beste Unterstützung, die er sich wünschen kann. Mit Anna ist eine mit allen Wassern gewaschene Revolverheldin in der Stadt aufgetaucht. Sie nimmt Albert unter ihre Fittiche, bringt ihm das Schiessen bei und macht die Maus zum Mann. Weil der frischgebackene Pistolero es mit der Nachhilfe aber allzu weit treibt, steht ihm bald noch mehr Ärger ins Haus. Anna ist nämlich verheiratet, und zwar mit dem skrupellosesten Schurken des ganzen Wilden Westens, Clinch Leatherwood .
Als einer der wenigen Filmemacher im Fernsehen und Kino dieser Tage verfügt Seth MacFarlane über eine unverwechselbare Stimme, sein Schaffen über einen Humor mit hohem Wiedererkennungswert. Nach den Zeichentrickserien «Family Guy» und «American Dad», die um die Jahrtausendwende auch im Schweizer Fernsehen erfolgreich gelaufen sind, sowie seinem Kinodebüt «Ted», bei dem er einem lasterhaften Teddybären die Stimme lieh, wagte Seth MacFarlane sich an seine Premiere als Hauptdarsteller.

Nach seinem Überraschungshit "Ted" hat Seth MacFarlane nicht nur die Geschichte zu "A Million Ways to Die in the West" geschrieben, er hat auch gleichzeitig die Hauptrolle und die Regie in der Komödie übernommen. Mit frechen Witzen und viel Humor ist ein völlig neuer Western-Film entstanden. Dabei nimmt MacFarlane das uramerikanische Genre des Westerns ziemlich lustvoll auf die Schippe. Bereits in "Ted" holte sich das Allroundtalent und Erfinder von "Family-Guy" hochkarätige Schauspieler ins Boot, und auch in der Western-Parodie kann sich die Besetzungsliste sehen lassen: Neben Amanda Seyfried, Charlize Theron und Liam Neeson ist auch 'How I Met Your Mother'-Star Neil Patrick Harris mit von der Partie.
