Während des 2. Weltkrieges führt die U.S. Navy ein folgenschweres Experiment durch: Ein Schiff der Marine soll für das Radar unsichtbar gemacht werden. Zum Entsetzen aller Anwesenden verschwindet der Zerstörer bei dem Test nicht nur von den Messgeräten. Das Kriegsschiff ist von einer Sekunde auf die andere wie vom Erdboden verschluckt und nicht mehr aufzufinden. Ganz anders empfindet dies die Mannschaft, die sich an Bord befunden hat.

Sie wird nämlich durch ein Zeitloch in das Jahr 1984 katapultiert. Das wiederum verursacht ein schwarzes Loch, welches immer größer zu werden droht. Der Matrose David Herdeg sieht nur eine Chance, die Katastrophe zu stoppen: Er muss den damaligen Versuchsleiter Dr. Longstreet finden, damit er das Experiment rückgängig macht. Das erweist sich jedoch als überaus schwierig: Denn niemand scheint zu wissen, wo und vor allem ob der Wissenschaftler überhaupt noch lebt ...

1943: Die Marinesoldaten David und Jim nehmen an einem geheimen Experiment der Navy teil. Dabei kommt es zu einer katastrophalen Panne: Ein elektromagnetisches Feld schleudert die beiden ins Jahr 1984. Das Philadelphia Experiment gehört in den Bereich der "Urban Legends". Obwohl es von der US-Navy immer in Abrede gestellt wurde, so wurde doch die Filmcrew mit Briefen einer nicht näher genannten amerikanischen Behörde konfrontiert, die darauf aufmerksam machte, dass der Film in den USA nicht erwünscht sei.
