Planet Mars im Jahr 2176. Obwohl nicht weniger gefährlich und unwirtlich als im Jahr 2007, leben mittlerweile 640'000 Menschen in verschiedenen Siedlungen auf dem Roten Planeten. Das Gesellschaftssystem ist matriarchalisch, die natürlichen Ressourcen werden in zahllosen Minen abgebaut. Doch plötzlich regt sich die uralte Marszivilisation wieder. Polizeileutnant Melanie Ballard (Natasha Henstridge) hat den Auftrag, mit ihrem Team (unter anderen Pam Grier, Clea DuVall und Jason Statham) den gefährlichen Gewaltverbrecher James "Desolation" Williams (Ice Cube) auf seinem Weg zum Richter zu begleiten. Doch bloss Melanie erreicht in einem Geisterzug den Stützpunkt.

Laut ihrer Aussagen sind die Krieger eines alten Marsstammes auferstanden und haben es in den Siedlungen auf jegliches menschliches Leben abgesehen. Sie übernehmen offenbar die Körper der Bewohner, indem sie diese zuerst bestialisch abschlachten. Ihr Ziel: Der Mars soll wieder menschenfrei werden. Ein Wettlauf mit der Zeit beginnt. Denn schon rückt die blutrünstige Horde auf die Hauptstadt vor.

Horror-Altmeister John Carpenter ("Das Ding aus einer anderen Welt", "Halloween - Die Nacht des Grauens" führte Regie bei diesem actiongeladenen Sci-Fi-Abenteuer. In den Hauptrollen überzeugen action-erfahrene Darsteller wie Natasha Henstridge ("Species"), Ice Cube ("Three Kings"), Clea Duvall ("The Faculty") oder Pam Grier ("Jackie Brown"). Superstar Jason Statham erlebte ein Jahr nach dem Release von "Ghosts of Mars" mit der Hauptrolle in dem Actionthriller "The Transporter" seinen großen Durchbruch.
